How Safe Is Your Child's Packed Lunch?
A parent may think that their children's packed lunch can remain at a safe temperature until lunch hour however, this isn't always the case. It has been noted that the majority of packed lunches do not stay at a safe temperature by the time lunch time rolls around
as packed lunches usually only last one to two hours before they are exposed to food-borne illnesses. Even when the parent uses containers, which are made to retain a cold lunch, they still are found to be at an unsuitable temperature for kids to eat. Some parents had even sent their children their packed lunches with ice packs and it
was found that the lunches with only one ice pack were not enough. To prevent food poisoning, the amount of icepacks required had to be closer to 3 or 4 ice packs to remain at
a suitable temperature. Sometimes even the teachers, whom were able to keep their food in a refrigerator, were not able to keep their foods at the right temperature until lunch time. It is important to keep your lunch at about 4 degrees since this is technically the temperature of your refrigerator.
Some foods like meats, poultry, eggs and
seafood can become dangerous for your child
since bacteria can grow on them quite
easily. A way to make perishable foods less
suseptible to this is by draining them of any liquids; drying your food helps make sure they do not spoil
as quickly. The best option for kids is to send them products which do not spoil easily such as apple sauce, fruit cups, whole grain bread, trail mix, or cereal. For a suitable treatment for food poisoning, consult your physician. It is important to be careful of which ingredients to add to your child's lunch.
