Healthy weight loss is hard to come by in today’s world of advertisements upon advertisements promoting the latest prescription weight loss medication or quick fix for weight loss. It is uncommon to watch your favorite show nowadays without seeing at least one advertisement about a miracle weight loss supplement or a special drug that helps you lose weight with little to no effort at all. Some of these miracle pills and supplements may give you temporary results, but the only sure fire way to lose weight effectively is through a healthy weight loss exercise routine and a healthy weight loss diet.

In today’s modern world of efficiency and immediate results, Americans tend to shy away from hard work – the only guaranteed way to lose weight. These exercises can be as simple as running everyday – starting off slow and and slowly increasing your speed and distance until you’re able to run farther than you ever have before.

Getting involved at a gym, although sometimes pricey, is also a wonderful option. Many gyms offer the opportunity to hire a personal trainer who will cater to your specific needs and push you in a personalized way to achieve your weight loss goals.

Regardless of what exercise you choose, make sure it is right for you. The most important part of losing weight through exercise is to set a pace that is comfortable and effective without being too overbearing, or conversely, too easy. Talk to weight loss experts or consult a book, website, or medical journal on what would be the best and most comfortable weight loss exercise for you.

Another extremely important aspect of weight loss is the food you consume. It would be easy to tell you to stay away from greasy foods and to only eat salad until you’re as skinny as you desire, but letʼs be practical – some greasy foods are just too delicious to stop eating.

Luckily, a healthy balance in your diet can be achieved without weeks of nothing but salads and water. The easiest way to make sure that you are achieving this balance is by finding a diet plan regiment. There are countless books, websites, and magazines specifically devoted to weight loss diets. These regiments are designed by professionals, and are extremely effective. But remember, always make sure that the diet plan you set up is right for you. Our bodies can have adverse effects to a sudden and intense change, so be careful what you put into and take out of your diet.

The biggest thing I can stress about weight loss is making sure the steps you are taking in order to achieve a smaller size are practical, comfortable, and reasonable. You are beautiful just the way you are, but if you’d like to shed a few pounds, find a healthy diet and exercise plan that fits into your lifestyle. Only you can decide how much weight you want to lose, or how you go about doing it.

Yes, it is true. Women do have prostates. Fortunately, they are very small and underdeveloped, and not at risk for cancer. But, there still remains the fact that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. This is a disease that not only effects the men diagnosed, but their wives, girlfriends, and families as well.

Prostate cancer usually shows no signs or symptoms, so it can be typically overlooked until it is too late. The best thing to do is to encourage a man to go for a checkup if he experiences persistent hip or back pain, has difficulty urinating, feels pain and/or a burning sensation during urination, or has blood in his urine. These are all things that cause prostate cancer in men, and should not be taken lightly. Men who normally have yearly checkups with a registered M.D. are less likely to miss these early signs, so always encourage them to have these checkups, even if they are not showing any abnormalities that could suggest cancer. To summate, the best thing a partner, child, friend, or spouse of a man, especially after he has turned 50, can do to help prevent the onset of prostate cancer is to encourage him to continue to get checked up.

Even if a man and his partner can do everything in their power to try to be ready for prostate cancer, they can not always prevent it. A man’s age, family history, and race all play factors in the development of prostate cancer in a man. African American men who are over 50 and have a family history of prostate cancer are at the highest risk. Other men can get it though. So, if a man does become diagnosed, it is the responsibility of his family and friends to help him get treatment, possibly with a prostate cancer medication.

An important thing to remember is that the mortality rate of a man diagnosed with prostate cancer is virtually zero. So remain strong. To show support for someone dealing with prostate cancer, you should regularly attend doctor’s appointments and support groups with him. Another great way to show that you support him is to do as much research you can. Truly knowing all you can about this disease will help let a man suffering know that you want to help as much as possible.
The final way I can suggest for the partner of a man to support him in his dealing with prostate cancer is to connect with other women in the same place as you. There is an organization known as WAPC which is a support group for women who are with men suffering from prostate cancer.

If all of these steps are taken, it will help a man suffering know that he has someone to support him, no matter what. Behind every great man is a great woman, and that fact remains for those suffering from prostate cancer. Having someone there to support a man while he is suffering can mean all the difference.

Did you know that regular exercise can reduce the pain of osteoarthritis? Studies have found that people who regularly exercise have less pain from their joints than those who do not. In fact, even if the exercise does not result in weight loss, it may help you to feel better and be more comfortable. How can exercise help you in your pain control?

Extra weight on your body can cause the joints in your body to ache, simply due to the stress that is put on them. While extra weight is not the sole cause of osteoarthritis, it is one leading cause of it and it can be quite painful. It causes a vicious cycle as well, because you need to exercise to lose weight, but it can be painful to do so.

Studies seem to indicate that regular exercise has an effect on the cytokines of the body. Excess cytokine production has been found to break down the cartilage between the joints and cause joint disease, like osteoarthritis. Exercise can cause the cytokine production to be decreased, helping you to have less pain.

While you may feel that exercise will cause you more pain, understand that it can actually cause you less pain in the long run. Simply start out slow and give your body the time it needs to adjust to your new habit. You may hurt for a few days, but you will soon see that it can help you to feel better and feel less pain in the future.

Whether you are exercising for weight loss or to simply feel better, it can have a big impact upon your pain level as well. Give it a chance and you will soon see big results in how you feel physically and mentally. Osteoarthritis is not something that can hold you back, if you will get the regular exercise that your body needs.

The Placebo Effects of Caffeine

Many people feel they cannot do without their morning cup of java — that without it, they won’t be able to get into the groove of their day — but they couldn’t be more mistaken.

Studies have demonstrated that long-term caffeine use versus placebo have no discernible differences. Due to this lack of significant difference, scientists were able to conclude that there are no benefits to drinking having caffeine as opposed to being caffeine free.

That “Instant Kick?”

Like most drugs, caffeine takes approximately 15-30 minutes to enter the bloodstream, yet some people report that their first sip of their preferred caffeinated beverage gives them an instant start. This is a demonstration of the placebo effect. The mind believes that relief from a caffeine headache is coming, or that they are going to “wake-up” and be more alert with that first sip, and so it happens.

The truth is, there is no “instant kick” from taking caffeine into the body. It takes a certain amount of time to get into the bloodstream, and will last in a person’s system for a long period of time, depending upon the individual’s metabolism. For example, if a person enjoys an espresso with 100mg of caffeine, approximately six hours later, this person will still have about 50mg of caffeine in his or her system.

The effects of drinking a morning cup of Joe are pure placebo — at least for the first 15-30 minutes, and it stays in a person’s system much longer than they think.

The Real Effects vs. Placebo Effects of Caffeine

Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in the brain, the receptors that are responsible for keeping a person awake. Once these receptors are blocked, dopamine and glutamate become active, which gives the person an energy boost.

However, this energy boost is simply that — a person is able to stay awake longer and perform tasks that require concentration.

The placebo effect comes in when a person believes that they are more mentally clear, have better memory, and are able to learn more quickly. Again, this is a result of a placebo effect that caffeine provides. If the person believes that he or she is going to be able to learn more or memorize more, then they will likely prefer their caffeine kick over nothing at all.

Over the long term, there are no clear advantages to drinking caffeinated beverages — just a placebo.

In a study performed in 2010 in the Fall issue of Online Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care, David Gross found that lung cancer of Appalachian area respondents was higher than that of non-Appalachian respondents. The Appalachian area is known for its lower levels of education and socioeconomic status. In another study, “US Mortality Rates for Oral Cavity and Pharyngeal Cancer by Educational Attainment,” conducted in 2011, the researchers said that “Mortality rates for patients with oral cavity and pharynx cancers decreased significantly among men and women with more than 12 years of education, whereas rates increased among white men with less than 12 years of education.”

“Our study shows socioeconomic factors, as measured by years of education, play an important role in the risk of dying of cancer,” said Elizabeth Ward, PhD, director of surveillance research at the Cancer Society. “Just because we’re measuring education doesn’t mean we think education is the direct reason,” for differences between educated and non educated groups.

Education is a gateway to overall well-being, but it is not the sole determining factor in cancer mortality rates. With an increased level of educational attainment, it is also expected that a patient will have access to better health care coverage and insurance, as well as an interest in research studies to prevent certain cancers from occurring.

Individuals with a higher level of educational attainment are more likely to have access to better medical facilities, have higher paying jobs, and access to more cancer prevention resources. While these are all facets involved in a cancer diagnosis, there are mitigating factors such as genetics and lifestyle which must be taken into account.

People who have 12 years of education or less are also more likely to engage in riskier behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and improper diet. They will eat high sodium fried foods and otherwise have a cancer-promoting diet. Being more educated does not necessarily mean that the risks of cancer are completely eliminated, as diagnoses of cancer can be witnessed across gender, race, and socioeconomic thresholds.

While there is a correlation between educational attainment and the likelihood of getting cancer, educational levels are not the sole factor in receiving a cancer diagnosis. Those who do have more than 16 years of education are more likely to have better jobs, better access to health care, and other advantages than a person with a high school education receives.

The internet is a vast place, comprised of many unknowns, but this website is eliminating some of those rightful questions.

Quality Prescription Drugs has recently launched a new ‘how-to-order’ tutorial video that details everything that you need to know about the process. When watching the video customers will learn, step-by-step, what is required for the completion of an online transaction.

The marketing coordinator at Quality Prescription Drugs explains the decision to create the video: “We recognize that not everyone is comfortable dealing in the online format, and wanted to offer an educational means to demonstrate just how easy it is to acquire quality prescription medication from our website, because it really is quite easy.”

“The video is an extension of our commitment to upholding superior customer service in all facets of our business. We never stop thinking about how to improve.”

The marketing coordinator continues, “We institute projects like this because we know that, properly educated, most Americans will be able to take advantage of the considerable savings available through online (Canadian) pharmacies such as our own.”

The Youtube video is viewable here (or by clicking the picture above).

The genetic variants called 9p21 make those individuals carrying it genetically predisposed to heart disease and type 2 diabetes. However, there is good news for those carrying these genes! A recent study states that those with a genetic anomaly towards heart attack or stroke can reduce their risk by having a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. As co-principal author Sonia Anand concludes, “you can actually turn off the bad genes by adopting healthy dietary patterns.”

In the study, the researchers analyzed the diets of five ethnicities: European, South Asian, Chinese, Latin American and Arab – for both those who carry the 9p21 variant and those who don’t. The study concluded that individuals with the genetic predisposition who consumed a prudent diet compose mainly of raw vegetables, fruits and berries had a similar risk of heart attack to those with a low risk genetic profile.

Dr. Anand speculates that “a diet high in fruits and vegetables, and all of the good things that are contained in them, somehow modifies the expression of a particular gene.” This is promising news for people with a family history for heart disease. It demonstrates that “healthy living with a healthy diet, in addition to other lifestyle changes such as exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight, can take away from the risk that genes give you.”

It is recommended that you consume ten servings of fruits and vegetables a day and also keep fat to a minimum. So what ways can you incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet?

Below is an ideal sample menu:

Breakfast: Add a piece of fruit to your morning meal. For example, you can top your cereal or oatmeal with a banana and/or berries. Alternatively, make a smoothie full of real and frozen fruits. Your morning juice counts as fruit too, just make sure it is low-sodium, unsweetened 100% fruit juice or vegetable juice. (1-3 servings)

Snacks: A snack is a great way to incorporate a fruit or vegetable serving into your day. Grab an apple, peach or some baby carrots, and voila – you have increased your fruit and vegetable intake. (1 – 2 servings)

Lunch: If you order a sandwich or wrap, make sure to load it with lots of vegetables. Add a small side salad or cup of vegetable soup to your sandwich to make it a meal. Or, you can order a salad, composed entirely of vegetables, fruits and proteins, which will offer more vegetable servings. If you order a salad, make sure to watch the calories that come in the salad dressing by asking for the dressing on the side. (2 –4 servings)

Dinner: Dinner vegetables are quick and easy! You can heat canned or frozen vegetables in the microwave or via boiling water. You can also add a side salad to your meal, or sauté special vegetables, like asparagus. Substitute multiple vegetables for a starch, like a potato or bread, to increase your vegetable serving intake and reduce calories. (1-3 servings)

Put simply, the Sonoma diet is an evolution or rehashing of the Mediterranean diet, which is known for its “casual” style that includes leniency for things like (moderate consumption of) alcohol and occasional red meat. The Sonoma diet focuses more on phytonutrients, micronutrients, and antioxidants as the basis for healthy eating, but seeks to retain the same Epicurean spirit. There is no calorie counting with the Sonoma diet; instead plate sizes are used to regulate food intake.

Sonoma diet recipes generally focus around 10 foods that inventor Dr. Connie Gutterson has chosen because of their bold flavors and nutritional content. Dr. Guttersen has her doctoral degree in nutrition and serves as a dietary consultant for many Fortune 500 companies. The 10 superfoods she lists as such are as follows: whole grains, almonds, bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, grapes, spinach, blueberries, strawberries and olive oil.

In the following blog post we’ll review the Sonoma diet, including the stages/waves of the plan, and the pros and cons associated with it.

Sonoma Diet Plan

Sonoma Diet Wave 1 — Like the Atkins Diet, the Zone Diet, or the South Beach Diet, the Sonoma diet proceeds through 3 stages; under Gutterson’s system these are referred to as “waves.” The first wave is one is the most demanding, as there are the most restrictions with regards to what is allowed to be eaten, and the amounts. The food eaten during the first wave must be wholesome and unprocessed, in addition, the stage sugar intake at this stage is greatly reduced.

Sonoma Diet Wave 2 — The next wave includes more of a variety of food which are allowed, and weight loss slows to a more gradual pace. Wave two continues until the target weight for the individual is reached, at which point Wave 3 commences…

Sonoma Diet Wave 3 — This wave is known as the “maintenance” stage, and is arguably the most fun, once arrived at. It allows for the widest selection of food, including a glass of wine daily.

The Pros and Cons of the Sonoma Diet

Pros

Rave Reviews — The Sonoma diet has received positive reviews from many nutritionists, appearing in publications such as More, Women’s World, First Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, and Oprah Winfrey’s “O” (to name a few.) The diet is an acclaimed way to lower high blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and promote a fairly reasonable degree of healthy living.

Savor the flavor —The definitive aspect to the diet is that it emphasizes the things that you can eat over the things that you cannot. Gutterson wants people to worry less about the exact number of calories, and more about savoring what is on the plate. The Sonoma diet is known for its big flavors that don’t appear to compromise much in the way of nutrition.

Count Diameter Not Calories — The serving sizes are smaller, but achieved through reducing the size of the plate (7 inches for breakfast, and 9 inches for dinner) rather than issuing any hard-and-fast counts. The Sonoma diet is perfect for someone who wants to diet without feeling like they are on a diet. In short, it is about food enjoyment over food deprivation.

The Cons

How Low Can your Calorie Count Go? — As a diet which purports itself as something other than a low-calorie diet, some nutritionists have pointed out that that some of the wave 1 menus are supplying in the range of 900-1000 calories for women, and 1100-1300 for men, with only 200-300 more calories in wave 2. For many people this is not going to be enough, and they will fall into a ravenous state if they are the type of person who is reasonably active.

Can I Have My Vegetables on Another Plate? — Because the plate sizes are so limiting, the Sonoma diet works on limiting volume; and eating low-starch, high fiber vegetables is is usually something that is best done in quantity. For example, a cup of cooked spinach fills up half of a nine inch plate. Either Dr. Gutterson has it mind to pile your plate into the sky, or the vegetable serving sizes are an unintended consequence of her overall approach.

“Carb Crash” — Carbohydrate crash is pretty common in low-carbohydrate diets, but since the Sonoma diet doesn’t really claim to be low-carbohydrate it likewise has no method for dealing with the subsequent crash. The diet constantly criticizes low-carbohydrate diets, yet carbohydrate levels in the Sonoma diet are on par with other low-carbohydrate diets out there.

This study was conducted at the University of South Carolina; consisting of 14,345 male participants, the participants were given treadmill tests over six years, and then they had eleven years of follow up interviews. While all of the participants were trying to lose weight, the researchers found that those who continued to increase their endurance level, or maintain it, over the studied period faced less health problems than those who failed to maintain their fitness levels, even if the latter lost weight! Further, during the eleven year follow up period, 914 died from causes ranging from heart disease to stroke. The majority of participants who died from poor fitness level related deaths (i.e. heart disease and stroke) were those whose fitness level decreased, even if they lost weight. The lead researcher of the study, Duck-chul Lee, concludes that “you can worry less about your weight as long as you continue to maintain or increase your fitness levels.”

The results of this study on average life expectancy stress the continual need to physically push yourself; you should always strive to increase your physical fitness level. Remember, fitness is broken into three subsections – cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility – and you should work on improving all three! With this in mind, below are some suggestions for ways to improve your fitness level:

Cardiovascular training: Cardiovascular fitness is synonymous for aerobic activity, which includes activities like running, swimming, biking, fast walking, aerobic classes, etc. When doing aerobic activities, aim to raise your heart rate to up to 50-85% of your maximum heart rate. If you are just starting an exercise program, or have not exercised some time, work your endurance up slowly. Start by doing at least twenty minutes of cardiovascular activity, increasing your exercise session every few weeks. You should start by exercising at least three times a week with a goal of ultimately exercising five times a week.

Strength training: Strength training workouts test muscular strength. These workouts consist of activities such as weight machines, free weights, tubing, and calisthenics (i.e. push-ups, abdominal crunches). In order to strength train, you will need access to a location with weight machine facilities – so buy a gym membership! In general, the rule is to use an appropriate weight, whereby you will fatigue the muscle after the number of intended repetitions. In the beginning, you should aim to perform resistance training exercises two times a week, at least twenty to thirty minutes per session. Eventually, you should work up to training four times a week, at twenty to thirty minutes per session, completing two to three sets at eight to twelve repetitions each.

Flexibility Training: Flexibility exercises are defined as the range of motion around a joint. It is important to maintain an adequate range of motion in order to reach peak performance in cardiovascular and strength activities. The bad news is, certain factors, such as age, inactivity, and gender, contribute to a loss of range of motion. The good news is, working on stretching can increase your range of motion and have added benefits, such as reducing muscle soreness and reducing the risk of injury. You can work on your flexibility by attending yoga or Pilatesclass! You should also stretch after cardiovascular or strength activity; hold each posture for ten to thirty seconds.

By following the above recommendations, you will surely increase the average life expectancy in your household, hopefully leading to a long and happy life!

Everybody has those moments when they are sitting at work or daydreaming at school, and thinking back to their last vacation. The relaxing days in the sun sitting on the beach seem long-passed when you are sitting in your quiet office listening to the sound of rain hit the windows. When you return from your vacation, you may not be feeling at the top of your game. Unfortunately, that relaxing vacation of yours may have taken a toll on your brain, especially if you took a trip to the tropics.

Your vacation may have greatly affected your mental function ability. The stress of planning your trip might have been difficult, and sometimes can ruin the entire trip if it is not perfect. That’s what vacation planners are here for! You could try giving them the planning job to save yourself some time and avoid stress. It is true, though, that when those lengthy emails start coming in from the hotel or from the vacation planner you may experience “email bombardment”. A study from London describes that as someone waits for an email, their concentration is off track. They are trying to be mentally prepared for the email they are going to receive instead of focusing on other tasks. This email overload can actually reduce your IQ by up to ten points.

Then there was the transportation to your destination. When you were up in the air and on your way to your destination, you felt the dryness in the air. To worsen this problem, you may have said yes to the alcohol when it came around. Depending on what you were drinking, it’s possible that you dropped your IQ ten to twenty points when you consumed your beverage while in flight. Alcohol can cause you to become more dehydrated in the dry air of a plane, so in the future it is best to just stick to water or reduce your alcohol intake.

All those months of exercise for that bikini body really paid off, but the exercise should not stop there. Inactivity while on vacation can reduce the amount of oxygen that enters the brain, causing certain nerve cells to degrade. To prevent this from happening, it is best to stay active on your trip with daily walks or some laps in the pool. Since you may be in a hot place, doing those laps in the pool may be your number one choice since it is refreshing. Some people may also prefer a nice cold beer to keep cool as well, but this may not be the best choice. Those overly cold drinks can reduce your IQ by up to 10 points since your body is rushing the blood from your brain to your stomach to balance the change in temperature.

To avoid this brain melt-down, it is best to just stay active on your trip, keep your brain working by playing intellectual games, and keep hydrated! These vacation after-effects should only last a couple of weeks before you feel back to normal. There are still many benefits of vacations such as helping us reconnect with ourselves, promoting creativity, and lowering stress levels. Be sure to leave a day or two after your vacation before you go back to work so you can feel at home again!
