Simvastatin-vs LipitorSimvastatin, also referred to as Zocor, and Lipitor, known as Atorvastatin, are both medications that are used to treat and maintain high cholesterol. High levels of cholesterol in the body are a very serious condition that can lead to hardening of the arteries and heart damage. This can also lead to serious health problems, including stroke, heart attack and vascular disease. These two drugs are very similar, which can make it hard to determine which brand will work best for you. Below is some critical information that will show you the similarities and the differences of these drugs. This will help you make a better informed decision about your drug choice.

Simvastatin and Lipitor Dosage Requirements

Lipitor is much more potent than Simvastatin; therefore, you will be required to take a lower daily dosage of this drug. While exact dosage can be different for each person, the average adult will take between 10mg and 20mg of Lipitor per day, compared to 20mg to 40mg of Simvastatin. The children’s version is modified and is the same for both drugs, at 10 mg per day. Some patients find that Simvastatin is not powerful enough for them even at the daily maximum level. Oftentimes, these patients transfer over to start using Lipitor.

Simvastatin and Lipitor Side Effects

Each of these drugs has their own set of side effects that may be experienced with the use of the drug. The side effects for Lipitor include joint and muscle pain, back pain, sinus infections, sore throat, unexplained rash, diarrhea, and various infections. The side effects for Simvastatin include abdominal pain, flatulence, nausea, upper respiratory tract infection, fatigue, digestive problems, muscle pain and headaches.

Effectiveness of Simvastatin and Lipitor

A recent study was performed by researchers at the University of Maryland to determine if Lipitor or Simvastatin were more effective at treating high cholesterol. The findings of this study were revealed at the American Heart Association annual conference. It revealed that patients who take Lipitor were 14 percent less likely to have a heart attack or stroke. This is a significant difference that has led some doctors across the country to only recommend Lipitor.


Determining which drug for high cholesterol is right for you can be difficult. It is important to note that Simvastatin is available in generic version whereas Lipitor is only available in a brand name version. This makes Lipitor more expensive to use than Simvastatin. You may also need to consider potential drug interactions with each of the medications. The best thing to do is to talk to your doctor about your condition and which drug option is would be right for you.

There are two forms of cholesterol – low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). LDL cholesterol is often regarded as the bad form of cholesterol because it can build up plaque along the arterial walls. However, while high levels of cholesterol are not normal, they are not necessarily the prime indicator for the risk of heart-attack that they are perceived to be. In fact, there are several studies that have shown that low levels of cholesterol can lead to many other serious conditions as well.

Cholesterol plays numerous roles in the biochemistry of our bodies. It aids body repairs, and is often found in scar tissue. Cholesterol helps the body to digest food and additionally waterproof the cells within our bodies. Much of our bodily functions can be attributed to cholesterol in some way. Some researchers suspect that a healthy level of cholesterol may reduce the risk of cancers. When the body is not able to produce enough cholesterol, whether it’s because of cholesterol-lowering drugs or other reasons, the natural balance of the body is interrupted; leading to an array of problems including blood sugar problems, edema, infertility, reduced libido, allergies, chronic inflammation and difficulty healing.

What Is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a lipid, meaning it is a fat. Everyone tells you when trying to lose weight avoid items high in cholesterol, saturated fats, or Trans fats. This is somewhat true. You need cholesterol! Cholesterol is what makes hormones, vitamin D, and bile (this helps your body use and digest fat that comes with the food you eat). Imagine life without cholesterol, we would all have weak bones, and any fat we consumed would go straight to our thighs. Cholesterol is beautiful!

Now before you get too excited and reach for that greasy (and probably cholesterol filled) hamburger, you do need to limit your cholesterol intake. One egg a day provides just the right extra amount of cholesterol (300 mg daily) to maintain the perfect health and not gain any weight. Each day your liver alone produces 1,000 mg of cholesterol, so you just need a tad more. If you consume too much cholesterol you may experience things like heart disease. If you have any risk factors for heart disease it is recommended you decrease your cholesterol intake per day to 200 mg per day.

To decrease your cholesterol intake, avoid these foods: beef, pork, lamb, egg yolk, turkey, duck, goose, and fish oil. Generally the foods highest in cholesterol are those the highest in protein (meats). Vegetables and fruits have no cholesterol. An ideal meal would be a vegetable stir-fry with a small amount of meat in it. Find the perfect balance of cholesterol for you and you will have a healthy heart.

Unusual Cholesterol Amongst Teens

One in five teens in the United States have unusual cholesterol. A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also states that more than 40% of obese teens have abnormal cholesterol. It is becoming more and more highly recommended that teens undergo cholesterol testing to evade the risk of heart disease.

Teens have experienced their arteries become firmer and harder and even atherosclerosis. Screenings should be done every 5 years starting when an individual reaches the age of 20. If the screenings show irregular cholesterol levels the regularity of the screenings should be amplified to every one or two years. Counseling may also be recommended for the individual to be encouraged to make lifestyle changes in order to keep ones cholesterol at a steady level.
If you have high levels of cholesterol you should:

• Reduce your intake of saturated fat

• Reduce your calorie intake by at least 7 percent

• Increase the amount of fiber you consume by 5 or more grams daily

• Lessen your cholesterol intake to under 200 milligrams daily

• Try herbs and other products said to lower your cholesterol such as green tree extract, garlic, flaxseed, and fish oil.

In the past, it was genetics which caused children to be suspected of having cholesterol problems, but currently, weight is included in the criteria. Because of obesity, illnesses which were only thought to be applicable to adults are now becoming more frequently found amongst children.
