Actonel belongs to the class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. Actonel and generic risedronate are used to treat and prevent osteoporosis. Actonel may be used in post-menopausal women or to prevent osteoporosis in women on treatment with corticosteroids. Actonel works by slowing the action of osteoclasts which break down bone and as a result increases bone mineral density. At the same time, Actonel helps bone building cells known as osteoblasts to work more efficiently. Actonel 5mg is the recommended daily dose but this varies from patient to patient.

Some common side effects of Actonel include mild gastrointestinal problems (heartburn, nausea, or upset stomach), diarrhea, gas, constipation, pain in the muscles, joints, or back, pain or burning during urination, mild skin rash, or headache.
Some serious side effects of Actonel include chest pain, pain or difficulty swallowing, pain under the ribs or back, sudden or worsening heartburn, severe pain in the joints, muscles, or bones, and pain, numbness, or swelling in the jaw.

Risedronate, the generic product is not produced by the same company that makes the brand drug (Actonel).
