Description

What is DEXILANT (dexlansoprazole)?

Dexilant is an oral medication called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. It is prescribed for the management of heartburn and other symptomscaused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

This medication is effective in promoting the healing of erosive esophagitis, a condition characterized by damage to the esophagus due to the corrosive effects of stomach acid.

By reducing the production of stomach acid and neutralizing any excess acid present in the digestive tract, Dexilant helps to alleviate the discomfort and irritation associated with these conditions and promotes healing of the damaged tissue.

DEXILANT (dexlansoprazole) Warnings and Precautions

  • Gastric malignancy
Symptomatic response with Dexilant does not eliminate the presence of gastric malignancy.
  • Clostridium Difficile Associated Diarrhea
Dexilant may increase your risk of getting severe diarrhea, which may be caused by an infection (Clostridium difficile) in your intestines. Patients should use the lowest dose and shortest duration of PPI therapy appropriate for the condition being treated.
  • Bone fracture
People who take multiple daily doses of proton pump inhibitor medicines for a long period of time (a year or longer) may have an increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist or spine. You should take Dexilant exactly as prescribed, at the lowest dose possible for your treatment and for the shortest time needed.
  • Hypomagnesemia (lower than normal amount of magnesium in the blood)
This has been reported rarely, in most cases after a year of PPI therapy. In most patients, treatment of hypomagnesemia required magnesium replacement and discontinuation of the medication.
  • Concomitant use with methotrexate
Use of a PPI with methotrexate (primarily at high dose) may elevate and prolong serum levels of methotrexate and/or its metabolite, possible leading to toxicities.

Inform your physician or pharmacist of any known allergies prior to initiating treatment with dexlansoprazole, including those to similar medications such as lansoprazole and omeprazole. Disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, specifically those related to the liver and lupus.
