Description

Indications

Terazosin is indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), either as monotherapy or in combination with other medications. Lowering elevated blood pressure levels is essential in reducing the risk of stroke, heart attacks, and kidney complications. The mechanism of action involves the relaxation of blood vessels, facilitating improved blood flow.

Terazosin is employed in males for the management of symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), characterized by an enlarged prostate. It does not directly reduce the size of the prostate gland; rather, it functions by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and a segment of the bladder. This relaxation alleviates BPH symptoms such as urinary hesitancy, weak urine stream, and increased frequency or urgency of urination, including nocturnal episodes.

Terazosin belongs to the class of medications known as alpha blockers, exerting its therapeutic effects through this specific mechanism of action.

Uses and Dosage

Prior to initiating terazosin treatment or upon receiving a prescription refill, review the Patient Information Leaflet, if available, provided by your pharmacist. In case of any queries, consult your doctor or pharmacist for clarification and guidance.

Administer this medication orally, with or without food, according to the instructions given by your doctor.

When commencing terazosin therapy for the first time, refrain from exceeding a dose of 1 milligram initially. Terazosin may cause a sudden decrease in blood pressure, resulting in dizziness or fainting. This risk is heightened with the first dose. To mitigate the potential hazard associated with dizziness or fainting, take the initial terazosin dose at bedtime.

Your doctor will commence treatment with a low dose and gradually titrate the dosage. Whenever your dose is escalated or in the event of treatment reinitiation following discontinuation, adhere to taking the first dose at bedtime, unless otherwise directed, to minimize the risk of injury linked to dizziness or fainting. During these periods, avoid situations where fainting may result in physical harm.

Consistency in taking this medication is crucial to obtain the maximum therapeutic benefits. To facilitate adherence, take terazosin at the same time each day. In the event of missing terazosin doses for several days, it may be necessary to recommence treatment at a low dose and gradually increase the dosage once again. Seek guidance from your doctor for further details.

If terazosin is prescribed for the treatment of an enlarged prostate, it may take 2 to 4 weeks to observe an improvement in symptoms and up to 6 weeks to experience the full benefits of this medication. Notify your doctor if your condition does not ameliorate or worsens.
