Indications 

Penlac Nail Lacquer is a topical medication used in a comprehensive program to manage mild to moderate onychomycosis (fungal infection) of fingernails and toenails caused by a specific dermatophyte (trichophyton rubrum) in patients with a healthy immune system.  

The program includes regular removal of loose, infected nails, typically done monthly by a healthcare professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating nail disorders, including minor nail procedures. 

Classified as an antifungal agent, Penlac Nail Lacquer works by inhibiting the growth of nail fungus. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before using Penlac Nail Lacquer and with each prescription refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Ask your doctor if you have any queries or uncertainties. 

Penlac Nail Lacquer should only be applied to the nails and the surrounding skin. Avoid contact with other areas of your body, particularly the eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina. 

Typically, Penlac Nail Lacquer is applied once daily, preferably before bed or at least eight hours before washing.  

To properly use this medication, follow these steps: 

1. Start by ensuring you have properly trimmed your nails before your first treatment. 
2. Use the provided applicator brush to apply the solution evenly to all affected nails. Make sure to also apply the solution to the underside of the nail and the skin beneath it if you can reach those areas. 
3. Wipe off the bottle cap and neck to remove any excess solution, and then tightly replace the cap on the bottle. 
4. Allow the solution to dry for approximately 30 seconds before putting on socks or stockings. Refrain from washing the treated area for a minimum of 8 hours. 
5. For your subsequent doses, apply the solution over the existing medication already on your nails. 
6. Once a week, use a cotton square or tissue soaked with rubbing alcohol to remove all the ciclopirox from your nail(s). Afterward, try to remove as much of the damaged nail as possible using scissors, nail clippers, or nail files. 

To optimize the effectiveness of Penlac Nail Lacquer, maintain regular nail trimming throughout your treatment. Before starting the treatment and every week during the treatment, use a nail clipper or nail file to remove any loose or excess nail material. Your doctor will provide guidance on this process and will also trim your nails once a month during the treatment. 

Use this medication exactly as directed at a regular time each day. Avoid using too much or too little of it, and refrain from exceeding the prescribed frequency. 

Continue using Penlac Nail Lacquer for the prescribed duration, even if your symptoms improve or disappear. Ceasing this medication prematurely may lead to a recurrence of the infection. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential adverse effects of Penlac Nail Lacquer. If any of them persist or worsen, inform your doctor promptly. 

Common Side Effects 

• Redness or burning of treated skin 
• Alterations in the color and shape of nails 

Serious Side Effects 

• Blistering, swelling, or oozing on the applied area 

Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of the severe side effects above. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Penlac Nail Lacquer may occur. Prompt medical assistance should be sought if any of the following are observed: 

• Rash 
• Itching and swelling, particularly of the face, tongue, or throat 
• Severe dizziness 
• Difficulty breathing 

Not all side effects of Penlac Nail Lacquer are included in this list. Tell your physician promptly if any unlisted effects are experienced. 

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Penlac Nail Lacquer, inform your doctor of any known allergies, particularly to ciclopirox, other medications, or any of the components of this solution. 

To ensure Penlac Nail Lacquer is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of: 

• Diabetes 
• Numbness in fingers or toes, such as diabetic neuropathy 

Inform all your healthcare providers about any current or newly initiated or discontinued medications, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to lower the risk of drug interaction with Penlac Nail Lacquer. 

Penlac Nail Lacquer is flammable. Avoid using this medication near heat or an open flame, such as a lit cigarette. 

While using Penlac Nail Lacquer, refrain from wearing tight synthetic clothing that hinders air circulation. Opt for loose-fitting attire made of cotton or other natural fibers until the infection is fully healed. 

During pregnancy, the use of Penlac Nail Lacquer should only be considered if it is clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor. 

The potential transfer of ciclopirox into breast milk and its impact on a nursing baby is uncertain. Notify your doctor if you are currently breastfeeding before using this medication.
