Indications  

Rilutek is a prescribed medication indicated for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) treatment, a neurological disease impacting motor neurons, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. 

Rilutek falls under the benzothiazole drug class. While it does not provide a cure for ALS, it has the potential to slow down disease progression and extend patient survival. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before starting treatment with Rilutek and with each prescription refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Should you have any queries, consult your physician or pharmacist. 

Typically, Rilutek is taken twice daily with a 12-hour interval, as directed by the doctor. It should be taken on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. 

To achieve optimal results, take this medication exactly as directed at a consistent time(s) each day.  

Refrain from increasing the dosage or using this medication more frequently or for a longer duration than prescribed. Doing so will not accelerate the condition’s improvement and may raise the likelihood of experiencing side effects. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential adverse effects of Rilutek. Inform your doctor right away if any of them persist or get worse. 

Common Side Effects 

• Increased blood pressure 
• Numbness or tingling around the mouth 
• Weakness 
• Dizziness 
• Stomach pain or nausea 
• Breathing problems 

Serious Side Effects 

• Sudden chest pain, wheezing, or feeling short of breath 
• Dry cough or cough with mucus 
• Signs of low white blood cell counts: 
  • Fever 
  • Mouth sores 
  • Skin sores 
  • Sore throat 
• Signs of liver problems: 
  • Nausea 
  • Loss of appetite 
  • Stomach pain (upper right side) 
  • Tiredness 
  • Itching 
  • Dark urine 
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) 

Cease usage of Rilutek and promptly consult your physician if you encounter any severe adverse reactions, which may have a higher likelihood of manifestation in individuals of Japanese ancestry. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Rilutek may occur. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience indications of an allergic reaction, such as: 

• Hives 
• Difficult breathing 
• Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat 

Not all side effects of Rilutek are included in this list. Tell your doctor right away if any unlisted effects are experienced. 

Cautions 

Before taking Rilutek, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to riluzole or other medications. 

Consult your pharmacist for more details about Rilutek, as it may contain inactive ingredients that may cause allergic reactions or other complications. 

To ensure Rilutek is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of liver disease. 

Inform all your healthcare providers about any current or newly initiated or discontinued medications, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to reduce the risk of drug interaction with Rilutek. 

Rilutek poses a risk to the liver, particularly when used concurrently with certain medications for infections, birth control, high cholesterol, seizures, pain, or arthritis (including Advil). 

Rilutek could induce dizziness or drowsiness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) may intensify these effects. Limit alcohol consumption and seek medical advice when using marijuana (cannabis). Furthermore, refrain from driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks that demand alertness until you can ensure safety. 

Rilutek should only be used when necessary during pregnancy. Consult your doctor to weigh the risks and benefits. 

The transfer of riluzole into breast milk is uncertain. Seek advice from your healthcare provider prior to breastfeeding.
