Indications 

Buscopan Ampules are prescribed for alleviating muscle cramps in the stomach, intestine (gut), and urinary system, including the bladder and associated tubes. 

Moreover, Buscopan Ampules may be used in other diagnostic procedures where spasm-related issues may arise, such as gastroduodenal endoscopy. 

As an antispasmodic agent, Buscopan Ampules induce relaxation in the smooth muscles of the abdominal and pelvic organs, primarily by targeting the intramural parasympathetic ganglia within these organs. 

Uses and Dosage 

Buscopan Ampules are clear solutions intended for intramuscular or intravenous injection, typically administered by a medical professional. 

If self-administering, adhere to your doctor’s guidance for the proper administration of this medication. 

Before use and with each prescription refill, examine the available medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to consult your doctor or pharmacist. 

Typically, one ampule is administered via intramuscular or intravenous routes. If needed, repeat administration may be performed after a duration of 30 minutes. 

Intravenous injection should be administered at a controlled pace, as in rare instances, this medication may lead to a significant decrease in blood pressure or even shock.  

In endoscopy procedures, repeating the dose more frequently may be necessary, but the maximum daily dosage should not exceed 100 mg. 

Continuous daily use or prolonged use of Buscopan Ampoules should be avoided unless the underlying cause of abdominal pain has been thoroughly examined. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential adverse effects of Buscopan Ampules. Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms continue or worsen. 

Common Side Effects 

• Dizziness 
• Sleepiness 
• Dry mouth 
• Diarrhea 
• Upset stomach 
• Sore throat 
• Restlessness 

Serious Side Effects 

• Severe dizziness or fainting 
• Rapid heartbeat 
• Confusion 
• Difficulty urinating 
• Changes in vision, eye pain, or severe eye irritation 
• Seeing halos or unusual colors around lights 
• Red eyes 
• Dilated pupils 
• Seizures 
• Speech difficulties 
• New or worsening mental, mood, or behavioral changes 
• Hallucinations (visual or auditory) 
• Memory problems or loss 
• Shortness of breath 
• Excessive heat sensation 
• Lack of sweating during activities or in warm conditions 
• Seek immediate medical attention for: 
• Severe, persistent stomach pain, stomach pain accompanied by fever, nausea or vomiting, changes in bowel movements, tenderness, severe dizziness or fainting, or blood in stool 

Call your doctor promptly and ask for immediate medical assistance if any of the above effects are experienced. 

Allergic Reactions 

In rare cases, Buscopan Ampules may trigger a serious allergic response. Immediate medical assistance must be sought if you observe any indications of an allergic reaction, such as: 

• Rash 
• Hives 
• Itching 
• Red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin (with or without fever) 
• Wheezing 
• Chest or throat tightness 
• Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking 
• Unusual hoarseness 
• Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Buscopan Ampules, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to hyoscine. 

Seek further guidance from your pharmacist regarding these ampules, as they could include inactive ingredients that may trigger allergic reactions or other problems. 

Buscopan Ampules are contraindicated to patients with: 

• Myasthenia gravis 
• Megacolon 

• Narrow-angle glaucoma 
• Tachycardia 
• Prostatic enlargement with urinary retention  
• Mechanical stenoses in the gastrointestinal tract or paralytic ileus 

Avoid administering Buscopan Ampules via intramuscular injection to patients undergoing anticoagulant therapy, as it may lead to the formation of intramuscular hematomas. 

Due to the potential of anticholinergics to decrease sweating, caution should be exercised when administering Buscopan Ampules to patients with fever. 

Certain individuals may experience visual impairments or dizziness while using Buscopa Ampules. In such cases, refrain from driving or operating machinery until normal vision is restored or dizziness subsides. 

To avoid any drug interactions with Buscopan Ampules, inform your doctor or pharmacist about all the medications (prescription and nonprescription), vitamins, and herbal supplements you are currently taking or have recently used. 

Buscopan Ampules can potentially enhance the anticholinergic effects of some medications, such as: 

• Tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants 
• Antihistamines 
• Amantadine 
• Antipsychotics (e.g., phenothiazines, butyrophenones) 
• Disopyramide 
• Other anticholinergics (e.g., tiotropium, ipratropium, atropine-like compounds) 

Moreover, Buscopan Ampules may intensify the tachycardic effects of beta-adrenergic agents. 

Concomitant use of Buscopan Ampules and dopamine antagonists like metoclopramide may reduce the effectiveness of both medications on the gastrointestinal tract. 

Buscopan can affect certain laboratory tests. Inform all your healthcare providers and laboratory personnel about your use of this medication. 

Pregnant women, those planning to conceive, and breastfeeding individuals should refrain from receiving Buscopan Ampules.
