Description

Indications

Nitroglycerin is prescribed to prevent angina pectoris in coronary artery disease. It relaxes and widens blood vessels to improve blood flow to the heart muscle. This is not for relieving acute chest pain or immediate use before physical activity. Consult a healthcare professional for appropriate management in these situations.

Uses and Dosage

Administer the patch by carefully extracting it from the pouch and following the prescribed instructions to remove the protective clear liner. Typically, the patch is to be affixed to the upper arm or chest region; however, it can be applied to any area below the neck and above the knees or elbows on the body. Ensure the selected size is clean, dry, and devoid of hair.

Trimming hair in the application area is acceptable, but shaving is not recommended. Avoid application to regions with cuts or skin irritation. Refrain from applying the patch immediately after bathing or showering; wait until the skin is thoroughly dry. Notably, you can enjoy bathing, showering, and swimming while wearing the patch. Press the patch firmly onto the chosen location using the palm of your hand, and remember to wash your hands after application.

Adhere to the prescribed usage guidelines as provided by your healthcare professional, which typically involves the application of one patch daily, worn for 12 to 14 hours. The specific dosage is contingent upon your medical condition and your response to treatment.

Apply each new patch to a different skin area to mitigate potential skin irritation. Upon removing the used patch, fold it in half with the adhesive sides facing each other and dispose of it in a manner inaccessible to children and pets.

Consistency in medication use is pivotal to derive optimal therapeutic benefits. To facilitate adherence, administer the patch at the same time each day.

Side Effects

The initiation of this medication may bring about symptoms as your body adapts to the effects such as:

  • Headache

  • Flushing

Should these effects persist or intensify, promptly inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Note that headaches often signify the therapeutic action of this medication. Your physician may suggest managing headaches with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or aspirin. However, should these headaches persist or become severe, promptly notify your doctor.

To mitigate the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, exercise caution when transitioning from a seated or recumbent position to a standing one.

Cautions

Before commencing this medication, apprise your healthcare provider or pharmacist of any known allergies, whether it be an allergy to this medication, similar drugs (such as isosorbide mononitrate), nitrites, or any other allergens. This product may incorporate inactive constituents capable of inciting allergic reactions or adverse responses. For comprehensive insights, a discussion with your pharmacist is recommended.

Furnish your medical history to your healthcare provider or pharmacist before embarking on this medication, particularly if you have an account of head injury, anemia, low blood pressure, dehydration, or other cardiac conditions, such as a recent heart attack.

If you anticipate surgery, inform your surgeon or dentist of all products you currently utilize, including prescription medications, nonprescription drugs, and herbal supplements.

In case of an impending MRI test, communicate to the testing personnel that you are using this patch. Specific patches may contain metals that could potentially result in severe burns during an MRI. Seek guidance from your doctor to remove the patch before the test, how to correctly do so, and whether a replacement patch should be applied afterward.
