Description

Indications

Risperdal M is an antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat various mental and mood disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It can also be prescribed for the treatment of irritability associated with autism spectrum disorders in children and adolescents.

Risperdal M is an orally disintegrating tablet, which means it dissolves quickly in the mouth without the need for water. This can be especially helpful for individuals who have difficulty swallowing pills.

Risperdal M contains the active ingredient risperidone. It is classified as an antipsychotic agent. It works by altering the effects of certain chemicals in the brain. It helps to restore the balance of neurotransmitters, which are substances that transmit signals between nerve cells in the brain.

Use and Dosage

Risperdal M and its alternative form Risperidone comes in the form of dispersible tablet to take it by mouth with or without food, as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily. Place the tablet on your tongue right away and allow it to dissolve on your tongue. Do not split or chew the tablet. After the tablet has melted on the tongue, it can be swallowed with or without water.

The initial dose of Risperdal M is typically 1 to 2 mg per day, which can be given as a single dose or divided into two doses. The dosage may be increased gradually, in increments of 1 to 2 mg per day, at intervals of 24 hours. The recommended target dose is 4 to 8 mg per day. The effective dose range for schizophrenia in adults is 4 to 16 mg per day.

Note the dosages are recommendations and may vary depending on individual factors. Follow the specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider. They will determine the appropriate dosage for your condition based on factors such as your age, weight, medical history, and response to treatment.

If you forget to take a dose of Risperdal M, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: discuss the risks and benefits of using Risperdal M during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The potential risks to the fetus or infant should be carefully weighed against the potential benefits of treatment.
  • Pediatric patients: Risperdal M is used to treat irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents. However, use caution and closely monitor younger patients for any potential side effects or adverse reactions.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions: Inform your healthcare professional about any pre-existing medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, seizures, or liver or kidney problems. Risperdal M may require special monitoring or adjustments in dosage for individuals with these conditions.
  • Other medications: Inform your healthcare professional about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements. Some medications may interact with Risperdal M and affect its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects.
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): Risperdal M may increase the risk of developing NMS, a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by high fever, muscle stiffness, altered mental status, and autonomic dysfunction. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
  • Tardive Dyskinesia: Risperdal M may cause tardive dyskinesia, a condition characterized by involuntary movements of the face, tongue, or other body parts. These movements may be irreversible. Inform your healthcare professional if you experience any abnormal movements.
  • Hyperglycemia and Diabetes: Risperdal M may cause an increase in blood sugar levels, leading to hyperglycemia or diabetes. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is recommended, especially in individuals with a history of diabetes or risk factors for diabetes.
  • Orthostatic Hypotension: Risperdal M may cause a drop in blood pressure upon standing, leading to dizziness or fainting. Use caution when changing positions, especially from lying down to standing up.
  • Seizures: Risperdal M may lower the seizure threshold, increasing the risk of seizures. If you have a history of seizures or are at an increased risk, use caution and discuss with your healthcare professional.
  • Prolactin Elevations: Risperdal M may cause elevated levels of the hormone prolactin, leading to symptoms such as breast enlargement, lactation, and menstrual irregularities. Consult with your healthcare professional if you experience these symptoms.
  • QT Prolongation: Risperdal M may prolong the QT interval on an electrocardiogram (ECG), which can increase the risk of a potentially life-threatening irregular heartbeat. Inform your healthcare professional if you have a history of heart problems or are taking medications that can prolong the QT interval.
  • Withdrawal Symptoms: Abruptly stopping Risperdal M may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and anxiety. Consult with your healthcare professional before discontinuing the medication.
