Indications 

Uroxatral is a prescribed medication for alleviating the signs and symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia-BPH), such as painful or difficult urination and increased urgency or frequency of urination. 

As an alpha-1-adrenergic receptor antagonist, Uroxatral works by facilitating the relaxation of prostate and bladder muscles, thus promoting smoother urine flow. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before taking Uroxatral and with every prescription refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact your doctor or pharmacist. 

Typically, Uroxatral is taken once daily following a meal, as prescribed by the doctor. 

The tablet must be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed, as this could lead to a sudden release of the medication, potentially heightening the chance of side effects. 

For optimal results, take this medication exactly as directed, after the same meal every day. 

Keep taking Uroxatral despite feeling well, and refrain from discontinuing it without consulting your physician. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential adverse effects of Uroxatral. Promptly notify your doctor if any of these symptoms persist or worsen. 

Common Side Effects 

• Dizziness 
• Headache 
• Fatigue 

Serious Side Effects 

• A sensation of light-headedness or potentially fainting 
• New or worsening chest pain 
• Upper abdominal discomfort, appetite loss, dark urine, pale stools, or jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) 
• Painful or prolonged penile erection lasting 4 hours or more 

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the serious side effects mentioned above. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Uroxatral may occur. Immediate medical help is necessary upon observing any indications of an allergic response, including: 

• Hives 
• Difficulty in breathing 
• Itchiness or swelling in the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions 

Before initiating Uroxatral treatment, inform your doctor of any known allergies, particularly to alfuzosin. 

Seek further guidance from your pharmacist about Uroxatral, as it may contain inactive components that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications. 

To ensure Uroxatral is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of: 

• Liver disease 
• Kidney disease 
• Cardiovascular issues (e.g., chest pain, heart attack) 
• Low blood pressure 
• Specific eye conditions (cataracts, glaucoma) 

Some products may interact with Uroxatral, including other alpha-blocker drugs like prazosin and terazosin. To minimize the risk of such drug interaction, inform all your healthcare providers of any current or recently started or stopped medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. 

If you are concurrently using medication for erectile dysfunction-ED or pulmonary hypertension (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil), there is a potential for your blood pressure to decrease excessively, resulting in dizziness or fainting. Your physician may need to modify your drug regimen to mitigate this possibility. 

Certain medications can impact alfuzosin’s elimination from your system, potentially affecting Uroxatral effectiveness. Such medication include: 

• Azole antifungals like itraconazole and ketoconazole 
• Clarithromycin 
• Cobicistat 
• HIV protease inhibitors such as:  
  • Lopinavir 
  • Mifepristone 
  • Nefazodone 
  • Ribociclib 
  • Ritonavir 
  • Telithromycin 

Refrain from operating a vehicle or engaging in any dangerous activities until you are aware of the potential effects of Uroxatral on your ability to react. Your response may be compromised. 

Uroxatral has the potential to induce QT prolongation, a cardiac rhythm disorder. In rare cases, this can result in a fast and irregular heartbeat, which may be fatal. Immediate medical attention is necessary if symptoms such as severe dizziness or fainting occur. 

Elderly individuals may exhibit heightened sensitivity to Uroxatral’s side effects, notably dizziness and low blood pressure upon standing from a seated or reclining position, along with the potential for QT prolongation. These side effects can also elevate the risk of falling. 

The use of Uroxatral is not recommended for women, and its effects during pregnancy or on breastfeeding individuals remain undetermined.
