Description

Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate) Indications

Pradaxa is a type of anticoagulant, or blood thinner, known as a direct thrombin inhibitor. It is used to lower the chance of blood clots forming in your body by blocking thrombin, the blood’s central clotting agent.

Pradaxa was introduced in 2010 as the first FDA-approved alternative to warfarin to reduce the risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat) not caused by a heart valve problem. People with atrial fibrillation are at an increased risk of forming a blood clot in the heart, which can travel to the brain, causing a stroke, or to other parts of the body.

Pradaxa is also approved:

  • To treat blood clots in the veins of your legs (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT) or lungs (pulmonary embolism, or PE) following treatment with blood thinner injections
  • To reduce the risk of DVT and PE occurring again

Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate) Use and Dosage

It is important to take Pradaxa exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider and not to discontinue taking it without first talking with your healthcare provider. Stopping Pradaxa may increase your risk of having a stroke or forming blood clots.

Your dosage of Pradaxa will be determined according to the condition being treated and your creatinine clearance, which is a measure of kidney function.

Following are some things to keep in mind while taking Pradaxa Capsules:
