Drug Description

Indications

Tazorac Cream is a topical medication indicated for treating plaque psoriasis (red, scaly patches on the body) and acne vulgaris.

Categorized as a retinoid, Tazorac Cream works by inhibiting excessive growth of skin cells and reducing inflammation. These actions facilitate accelerated skin renewal, potentially enhancing the overall look and feel of the skin.

Uses and Dosage

Before using Tazorac Cream and with every prescription refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Should you have any inquiries, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Tazorac Cream is for topical application only and should not be used for ophthalmic, oral, or intravaginal purposes. In case of contact with mucous membranes, ensure thorough rinsing with water.

Typically, this cream is applied on the affected skin areas once daily in the evening as prescribed by the doctor.

To properly use Tazorac Cream, follow these steps:

  • For psoriasis treatment:
    1. Cleansing the affected skin beforehand is optional; if washed, gently pat the skin dry before cream application.
    2. Apply a thin layer of the cream exclusively over the psoriatic plaques.
    3. If a moisturizer is used, apply it at least one hour before using this medication.
    4. Ensure to wash your hands after application unless specifically treating psoriasis on your hands.
  • For acne treatment:
    1. Gently cleanse and dry your face before cream application.
    2. Apply a thin layer of the cream over the entirety of the affected skin.
    3. Wash hands with soap and water after applying the cream.

In case of unintended contact with untreated areas, wash off the cream to mitigate potential skin irritation.

Refrain from applying this medication to skin that is wounded, scraped, sunburned, or impacted by specific skin conditions such as eczema or seborrheic dermatitis.

To achieve optimal results, consistently apply Tazorac Cream at around the same time every day.

Avoid using excessive amounts or applying this medication more frequently or for a longer duration than prescribed, as this will not expedite the improvement of your condition but may heighten the risk of experiencing side effects.

Inform your doctor if there is no improvement in your condition or if it deteriorates.

Cautions

Before starting treatment with Tazorac Cream, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to tazarotene, vitamin A-related drugs (other retinoids like isotretinoin), or other medications.

Consult your pharmacist for more information about Tazorac Cream, as it may contain inactive components that may trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

To ensure Tazorac Cream is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of other skin conditions (like eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, sunburn, and sun sensitivity).

Notify all healthcare providers of any current or recently started or stopped medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to lower the risk of drug interactions with Tazorac Cream.

Some of the products that may interact with Tazorac Cream include:

  • Vitamin A products
  • Hair perming solutions
  • Other skin products with potent drying effects
  • Skin products containing alcohol/lime/spice (e.g., shaving lotions, calamine-based astringents, perfumes)
  • Medicated or abrasive soaps, shampoos, and cleansers

Tazorac Cream can increase skin’s sensitivity to sunlight and extreme weather. Minimize exposure to natural and artificial sunlight, including tanning beds and sunlamps. Wearing protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher is recommended, especially if you are prone to sunburn. Furthermore, limit prolonged exposure to cold or windy conditions.

During Tazorac Cream usage, refrain from electrolysis, waxing, and chemical depilatories for hair removal in the treated regions.

Tazorac Cream is contraindicated for pregnant women, as it could harm the fetus. Discuss suitable birth control options with your doctor for the treatment period.

If pregnancy is possible, a negative pregnancy test is required within 2 weeks before beginning treatment. Initiate Tazorac Cream use during the menstrual period to confirm non-pregnancy. Cease cream use and promptly contact your doctor if pregnancy occurs.

Pregnant or potentially pregnant women should avoid handling Tazorac Cream as it can be absorbed through the skin and pose risks to unborn babies.
