Indications 

Lopressor SR is prescribed for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), and post-myocardial infarction heart protection, either as monotherapy or in combination with other medications. 

Categorized as a beta-blocker medication, Lopressor SR works by inducing blood vessel relaxation and reducing heart rate to enhance blood circulation and lower blood pressure. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before initiating Lopressor SR and upon each prescription refill, thoroughly examine the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet. Seek guidance or supplementary details from your healthcare provider or pharmacist if needed. 

The dosage of Lopressor SR may vary per individual based on medical conditions and response to the treatment. 

Typically, this medication is taken once daily in the morning, ideally with or after a meal. 

The tablet can be divided, but it must be swallowed either whole or as half; avoid chewing or crushing it. 

For optimal results, take Lopressor SR exactly as directed by your doctor at the same times daily. 

Do not alter the prescribed dose or discontinue treatment without consulting your doctor, as abruptly stopping this medication could worsen your condition. Your doctor might recommend a gradual reduction in dosage before discontinuation. 

Side Effects 

Common Side Effects 

• Dizziness, fatigue, or weakness 
• Diarrhea, upset stomach, or vomiting 

If any of the above-listed side effects last or worsen, promptly notify your doctor. 

Serious Side Effects 

• Depressed mood 
• Severe dizziness or fainting 
• New or worsening chest pain 
• New or worsening abnormal heartbeat 
• Slow heartbeat 
• Shortness of breath, significant weight gain, or swelling in the arms or legs 

Inform your doctor immediately or seek medical assistance if you experience any of the serious side effects listed above. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Lopressor SR can occur. Seek immediate medical attention if any of the following symptoms manifest: 

• Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or talking 
• Hives 
• Itching 
• Rash 
• Red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever 
• Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat 
• Unusual hoarseness 
• Wheezing, chest, or throat tightness

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Lopressor SR, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to metoprolol tartrate or any of the inactive ingredients in this sustained release tablet. 

Inform your doctor about any current or recent use of other medications, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements, as certain medications may interact with Lopressor SR. 

Lopressor SR is not suitable for individuals with: 

• Breathlessness, difficulty breathing when lying down, or swelling of the feet or legs (indicative of a heart disorder) 
• A slow or irregular heartbeat 
• Sudden and severe chest pain (a sign of a heart attack) 
• Poor blood circulation in limbs, manifested as cold, pale hands or feet or leg muscle pain while walking 
• Low blood pressure 
• An untreated adrenal gland medulla tumor (pheochromocytoma) 
• Asthma or a history of breathing difficulties with wheezing or coughing 
• Severe skin problems 
• Severe drop in blood pressure, along with dizziness, rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, and cold, clammy skin (indicative of cardiogenic shock) 

Lopressor SR may cause drowsiness. Refrain from driving or operating machinery until you understand the impact of this medication on your alertness. 

Lopressor SR might impact specific lab tests. Inform all healthcare providers and lab personnel about your medication intake. 

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, intending to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before starting Lopressor SR. Discussing the potential benefits and risks for you and the baby is essential.
