Indications
Zymar is an ophthalmic solution indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of organisms.
As a quinolone antimicrobial, Zymar functions by eradicating the bacteria responsible for the infection.
Uses and Dosage
Before using Zymar and with every prescription refill, thoroughly review the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet. Seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist if you have any inquiries or concerns.
The usual course of Zymar treatment spans seven days:
- Days 1 and 2: one drop should be instilled in the affected eyes every two hours, for a maximum of eight times daily.
- Days 3 to 7: one drop should be instilled in the affected eyes up to four times daily.
Before usage, visually examine the eye drop solution. Avoid its use if any alterations in color or the presence of particles are observed and consult your pharmacist for a replacement.
For proper administration of this eye drop, adhere to these steps:
- Begin by washing your hands thoroughly.
- Ensure the dropper tip remains untouched and free from contact with any surfaces to prevent contamination.
- Tilt your head back, look upward, and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a pocket.
- Position the dropper directly above the eye and dispense the prescribed number of drops.
- After instillation, look downward, gently close the eye for 1 to 2 minutes, and apply slight pressure with one finger near the inner corner of the nose to prevent the medication from draining out. Avoid blinking or rubbing the eye during this period.
- Replace the cap on the dropper bottle securely after use. Do not wipe or rinse the dropper tip.
- Wash your hands to remove any residual medication after each application.
To maximize effectiveness, ensure to use Zymar exactly as directed at the same times daily. Refrain from altering the dosage or frequency of use unless directed otherwise by your doctor.
Continue using Zymar until you complete the full prescription, even if your symptoms improve. Prematurely discontinuing these eye drops could result in incomplete infection resolution and potential antibiotic resistance in the bacteria.
Contact your doctor if your symptoms continue or deteriorate or if any additional eye-related issues arise during treatment.
Side Effects

- Any emerging or deteriorating eye problems

Temporary vision blurriness may occur after applying Zymar. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require clear vision until you can do so safely.
The potential impact of Zymar on an unborn child is uncertain. Inform your healthcare provider of your pregnancy status or any plans for pregnancy.
The transfer of gatifloxacin into breast milk and its potential effects on a nursing infant remains uncertain. Discuss breastfeeding with your doctor if you are currently nursing a baby.
