Description
Indications
The Flexi-T plus 300 is an intrauterine device (IUD) that is used for contraception. It is a larger version of the Flexi-T 300, with dimensions of 32 mm long and 28 mm wide. The device is wrapped with 300 mm of copper wire. The Flexi-T plus 300 is designed for women who have given birth. It is inserted into the uterus and provides long-term contraception by preventing pregnancy. The device is made of polypropylene mixed with barium sulfate, which makes it visible on X-rays.
The Flexi-T plus 300 is a copper IUD. It works primarily by releasing copper ions into the uterus, which creates an inhospitable environment for sperm and prevents fertilization. The copper ions immobilize sperm, impair their motility, and interfere with their ability to fertilize an egg. Additionally, the copper also affects the lining of the uterus, making it less receptive to implantation.
Use and Dosage
The Flexi-T Plus 300 is an intrauterine device (IUD) made of polypropylene mixed with barium sulfate and wrapped with 300mm of copper wire to prevent pregnancy. It has a maximum in situ time of five years. A new Flexi-T can be inserted immediately after removal. Here are the steps on how to use it:
- Consult with your healthcare provider to determine whether the IUD is the right form of birth control for you.
- Choose a day to have the IUD inserted. It can be inserted anytime during your menstrual cycle as long as you are not currently pregnant.
- Your healthcare provider will first perform a pelvic exam to determine the position and size of your uterus.
- The IUD will then be inserted through the cervical opening and into your uterus.
- The IUD’s string will be cut to the appropriate length, which allows you to check that it is still in place.
- After the IUD is inserted, you may experience some cramping and spotting for a few days.
- Your healthcare provider will likely schedule a follow-up appointment to make sure the IUD is still in place and to address any concerns you may have.
The device is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider during a routine office visit. The insertion process typically takes only a few minutes.

Cautions
- Allergy or Sensitivity: Some women may be allergic or sensitive to copper or other components of the device. inform the healthcare professional about any known allergies or sensitivities before getting the device inserted.
- Uterine Abnormalities: Women with certain uterine abnormalities or conditions, such as a distorted or abnormally shaped uterus, may not be suitable candidates for the Flexi-T plus 300. discuss any pre-existing conditions with a healthcare professional.
- Infection Risk: There is a small risk of infection associated with the insertion of any intrauterine device. Women with a history of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or recent pelvic infections may have an increased risk of infection and may need to consider alternative contraceptive methods.
- Expulsion or Displacement: Although rare, there is a possibility of the device being expelled from the uterus or becoming displaced. If a woman suspects that the device has moved or been expelled, she should contact her healthcare professional for evaluation.
- Perforation: In rare cases, the IUD may perforate the uterus during insertion. This is a serious but rare complication that may require surgical intervention. Choose an experienced healthcare professional for insertion to minimize the risk of perforation.
- Pain or Discomfort: Some women may experience pain or discomfort during or after the insertion of the IUD. This can range from mild cramping to more severe pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers can often help alleviate these symptoms.
- Ectopic Pregnancy: Although rare, there is a risk of ectopic pregnancy with any IUD, including the Flexi-T plus 300. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus, typically in the fallopian tube. Be aware of the signs and symptoms of ectopic pregnancy, such as abdominal pain, abnormal bleeding, and shoulder pain, and seek immediate medical attention if any of these symptoms occur.
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): The Flexi-T plus 300 does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. If there is a risk of STIs, use additional barrier methods, such as condoms, to reduce the risk of infection.
- Pregnancy: The Flexi-T plus 300 should not be used if a woman is already pregnant or suspects she might be pregnant. If a woman becomes pregnant with the IUD in place, there is an increased risk of complications, such as miscarriage or preterm birth. Contact a healthcare professional immediately if pregnancy is suspected.
- Monitoring and Check-ups: Regular check-ups with a healthcare professional are recommended after the insertion of the Flexi-T plus 300. This is to ensure that the device remains in place and to address any concerns or issues that may arise.
- Menstrual Changes: Some women may experience changes in their menstrual cycle after the insertion of the Flexi-T plus 300. This can include heavier or longer periods, irregular bleeding, or spotting between periods. If there are significant changes or concerns about the menstrual cycle, consult with a healthcare professional.
- Expulsion during Menstruation: There is a slightly higher risk of IUD expulsion during menstruation. Women should be aware of this possibility and check for the presence of the IUD strings regularly.
