Drug Description

Indications

The purpose of this medication is to prevent pregnancy by means of the hormone drospirenone, which functions as a progestin.

Birth control pills may have other beneficial effects, such as regulating periods, reducing blood loss and painful menstrual periods, and decreasing the likelihood of ovarian cysts.

This product does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

To reduce the risk of contracting an infection, it’s important to use an effective barrier method, such as a latex or polyurethane condom or dental dam, during all sexual activity.

Uses and Dosage

Prior to using this product, carefully review the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. Understand when and how to take your pills, as well as what to do in case you miss a dose. Should you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Administer this medication orally, as directed by your physician, usually once per day. Choose a time of day that is easy to remember, and take the pill at the same time each day.

Start taking this medication on the first day of your menstrual cycle and continue to take one tablet daily without skipping any doses. Missing pills, starting a new pack late, or taking your pill at a different time than usual increases the likelihood of pregnancy.

If you experience vomiting or diarrhea within three to four hours of taking your tablet, refer to the Patient Information Leaflet for instructions on what to do if you miss a dose.

Vomiting or diarrhea may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pills. If vomiting or diarrhea persists, use an alternate birth control method (such as condoms or spermicide) and consult your physician or pharmacist for more information.

Taking this medication with your evening meal or before bedtime may alleviate stomach upset or nausea. You may opt to take this medication at another time of day that is more convenient for you to remember. Regardless of your dosing schedule, take this medication at the same time every day, with 24 hours in between doses.

If you are considering switching from other types of hormonal birth control (such as a patch or other birth control pills) to this product, consult your physician or pharmacist for instructions. Should you require further clarification, consult the Patient Information Leaflet, your doctor, or your pharmacist.
