Description

Indications

Zovirax is a prescription medicine indicated for:

  • Managing the primary outbreaks of genital herpes
  • Controlling unusually frequent recurrences of genital herpes (6 or more episodes per year)
  • Treatment of acute episodes of herpes zoster (shingles) and varicella (chickenpox)

Belonging to the class of drugs called antivirals, Zovirax incorporates into and halts the development of the viral DNA chain through the inhibition of viral DNA polymerase.

Zovirax is not a definitive cure for viral infections; the viruses causing these conditions remain in the body even when symptoms are not present.

However, Zovirax can alleviate symptoms, reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks, and accelerate the healing of sores. It may also reduce post-healing pain and itching.

In immunocompromised individuals, Zovirax can lower the risk of virus dissemination to other areas of the body.

Uses and Dosage

Before taking Zovirax and each time you refill your prescription, carefully read the medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Zovirax dosage is determined by the patient’s medical condition and response to the treatment. In children, the dosage is also determined by their weight.

Typically, Zovirax is taken two to five times a day for 5 to 10 days, with or without food, starting at the earliest manifestation of symptoms.

For optimal efficacy, maintain a constant level of Zovirax in your body by taking it at regular intervals, at the same time every day.

Complete the entire prescribed dose of this medication, and do not alter the dosage, skip doses, or terminate it prematurely, unless advised by your physician.

Cautions

Before starting treatment with Zovirax, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies, especially to acyclovir, any medications, or any ingredients present in Zovirax tablets.

To ensure Zovirax is safe for you, inform your physician of your medical background, specifically regarding any history of:

  • Kidney problems
  • Conditions related to a weakened immune system such as:
    • HIV disease
    • Bone marrow transplant
    • Kidney transplant

Zovirax may interact with medications that could cause kidney problems, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen.

To avoid potential interactions, inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are currently taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products

Acyclovir and valacyclovir are very similar drugs. Avoid using medications containing valacyclovir while taking Zovirax.

Seek your doctor’s approval before receiving specific immunizations/vaccinations, such as those designed for the varicella virus, while in Zovirax treatment.

Zovirax does not guarantee protection against the transmission of herpes infections. To prevent the spread of the virus, avoid contact between the infected area and others. Refrain from touching the affected area and then touching your eyes. Regularly washing your hands can help prevent transmission to others.

Zovirax does not prevent the transmission of genital herpes to your partner. Refrain from having sexual intercourse when you have active lesions or initial symptoms of an outbreak. It is still possible to spread genital herpes through “viral shedding” from the skin, even if you have no symptoms.

Use of Zovirax during pregnancy should be limited to cases where it is clearly necessary. Pregnant women should consult their doctor to discuss the risks and benefits of this medication before use.

Acyclovir can be transferred to a nursing infant through breast milk, but it is not expected to cause harm. Seek advice from your doctor before breastfeeding when taking this medication.
