Cloxapen is a prescribed medication used to treat a broad range of bacterial infections. 

Cloxapen belongs to the class of penicillin antibiotics and exerts its antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial growth. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before starting treatment with Cloxapen and with every prescription refill, thoroughly read the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet. Should you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist. 

The recommended dose, frequency, and duration of Cloxapen treatment may differ for each individual, taking into account their medical condition and response to the treatment, with consideration given to weight in children. 

Typically, this antibiotic is taken on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. 

For optimal efficacy, ensure even intervals when taking Cloxapen, at the same time of the day daily.   

Complete the entire prescribed course of this antibiotic, even if your symptoms improve within a few days. Stopping it too early may permit bacterial growth, potentially leading to a recurrence of the infection. 

Side Effects 

The potential adverse effects of Cloxapen are outlined below. Promptly notify your doctor if any of these symptoms persist or deteriorate. 

Common Side Effects 

• Upset stomach or vomiting 
• Diarrhea 
• Abdominal pain 
• Gas 

Serious Side Effects 

• Sneezing 
• Severe upset stomach or vomiting 
• Severe diarrhea, even after discontinuing the medication 
• Unexplained bruising or bleeding 
• Seizures 
• Vaginal yeast infection (report any itching or discharge promptly) 

Contact your doctor right away and ask for medical assistance if any of the severe symptoms above occur. 

Allergic Reactions 

In rare cases, Cloxapen may trigger a severe allergic response. Immediate medical attention is needed if you observe signs of an allergic reaction, such as: 

• Skin rash, hives, itching, or blistering with or without fever 
• Wheezing 
• Chest tightness 
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing 
• Unusual hoarseness 
• Mouth and throat swelling

Cautions 

Before taking Cloxapen, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to: 

• Cloxacillin 
• Other antibiotics, including penicillin-type medications (e.g., amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin) 
• Cephalosporins (e.g., cephalexin, cefuroxime) 

Ask your pharmacist for more details about Cloxapen, as it may contain inactive ingredients that may trigger allergic reactions or other problems. 

Seek advice from your doctor before taking Cloxapen if you have a history of kidney problems. 

Some of the products that may interact with Cloxapen are: 

• Fusidic acid  
• Methotrexate 
• Tetracyclines 
• Warfarin 
• Khat 
• Guar gum 

To prevent such interactions, inform your doctor of all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products. 

Cloxapen may influence specific laboratory tests (diabetic urine tests), causing inaccurate results. Inform all healthcare providers and laboratory personnel that you are taking this medication. 

Cloxapen can impair the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines, such as the typhoid vaccine. Inform your healthcare provider about your use of this medication before any immunizations. 

Notify your doctor if you are currently pregnant or intend to become pregnant and discuss the advantages and potential risks of taking Cloxapen during pregnancy. 

Consult your doctor before breastfeeding, as cloxacillin is excreted into breast milk.
