Drug Description

Indications

Prinzide is a combination medicine containing lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide, intended for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).

Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor that functions by dilating blood vessels, facilitating smoother blood flow. Hydrochlorothiazide, on the other hand, acts as a diuretic or “water pill,” promoting increased urine production to eliminate excess salt and water from the body.

This medication is typically prescribed as a second-line treatment when monotherapy fails to manage blood pressure effectively.

Uses and Dosage

Before taking Prinzide and with each prescription refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. For any uncertainties, seek clarification from your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

The dosage of Prinzide is determined based on the patient’s medical condition and response to the treatment.

Typically, Prinzide is taken once every morning, as prescribed by the doctor, without regard to food intake.

For optimal results, take this medication exactly as directed, around the same time(s) daily. Do not alter the prescribed dosage, frequency, and duration of intake without your doctor’s approval.

Continue taking Prinzide even if you are feeling well. Do not discontinue the use of this medication without consulting your doctor.

Cautions

Before starting treatment with Prinzide, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to:

  • Lisinopril
  • Hydrochlorothiazide
  • Other ACE inhibitors (e.g., captopril, benazepril)
  • Other medications

Ask your pharmacist for further details, as Prinzide may contain inactive components that may cause allergic reactions or other complications.

To ensure Prinzide is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of:

  • Allergic reaction with swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat (angioedema)
  • Blood filtering procedures (e.g., LDL apheresis, dialysis)
  • Desensitizing treatment for bee/wasp sting allergy
  • Gout
  • Lupus
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Skin cancer

Inform all your healthcare providers about any current, newly initiated, or discontinued medications, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to mitigate the risk of drug interaction with Prinzide.

Some of the products that may interact with Prinzide include:

  • Aliskiren
  • Dofetilide
  • Drugs that weaken the immune system or increase the risk of infection (e.g., everolimus, sirolimus)
  • Lithium
  • Drugs that may raise potassium levels in the blood (e.g., ARBs including losartan/valsartan, birth control pills containing drospirenone)
  • Sacubitril

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are using, particularly cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs like ibuprofen naproxen, as they may contain ingredients that could potentially elevate blood pressure or exacerbate heart failure. Seek guidance on the safe usage of these products.

When concurrently taking cholesterol-lowering medications (bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol), administer Prinzide either at least 4 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after these medications.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium, as Prinzide may impact potassium levels.

Prinzide can potentially disrupt specific lab tests, like those assessing parathyroid function, leading to inaccurate results. Inform laboratory staff and your healthcare providers about your use of this medication.

Prinzide can potentially cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting upon quick changes in position from lying down. This occurrence is more prevalent when initiating treatment. To prevent such issues, rise from the bed slowly, allowing your feet to rest on the floor for a few minutes before standing up.

The risk of lightheadedness or dehydration can be heightened by severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. If you experience prolonged diarrhea or vomiting, inform your doctor. To prevent dehydration, consume an ample amount of fluids unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

The use of Prinzide can increase your susceptibility to sunburn. Avoid sun exposure, including sunlamps and tanning booths, until you are aware of your reaction to the medication. If prolonged outdoor activity is necessary, apply sunscreen or wear protective clothing.

Prinzide may impact blood sugar levels for people with diabetes. Regular monitoring and doctor consultation are advised for medication, exercise, or diet adjustments.

Taking Prinzide during pregnancy can result in congenital disabilities and fetal or newborn death. Avoid pregnancy while taking this medication. If you suspect you might be pregnant, promptly consult your doctor.

The transfer of lisinopril into breast milk is uncertain. However, hydrochlorothiazide does pass into breast milk, but it is unlikely to cause harm to a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while taking this medication.
