Indications 

Suprax DT is a prescription medication primarily used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections. It is an antibiotic and is only effective against bacterial infections. It will not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. 

Suprax DT contains the active ingredient cefixime. It is an orally administered antibiotic that belongs to the class of drugs known as cephalosporins. It works by inhibiting the growth and spread of bacteria in the body. It does this by interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for the bacteria’s survival. By disrupting the cell wall, Suprax DT weakens the bacteria, making it easier for the body’s immune system to eliminate them. 

Use and Dosage 

Suprax DT should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The dosage may vary depending on your age, weight, and the specific infection being treated. Follow the instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist. 

Suprax DT comes in the form of Dispersible Tabletto take it orally with or without food usually taken once or twice a day. However, taking it with food may help reduce the risk of stomach upset. Place the Suprax DT tablet in a glass of water. Allow it to dissolve completely before drinking. Stir the mixture if necessary to help the tablet dissolve faster. It is designed to be dissolved in water and should not be chewed or swallowed whole. 

The specific dosing frequency will be determined by your healthcare professional. However, the most usual ways are the following.  

• For children: The recommended dosage for children is typically 8 mg/kg/day. This can be taken as a single dose or divided into two doses. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider for the specific condition being treated. 
• For uncomplicated cervical/urethral gonococcal infections: A single oral dose of 400 mg is recommended. 
• For otitis media in children weighing 45 kg or less: The usual pediatric dose is 8 mg/kg orally once a day, or 4 mg/kg every 12 hours. 

Do not skip doses or stop taking Suprax DT before completing the full course of treatment, as this may result in the infection not being fully cleared and the development of antibiotic resistance.

Serious Side Effects 

• A return of sore throat, fever, chills, or other signs of infection 
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing 
• Hives 
• Itching 
• Rash 
• Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, and eyes 
• Watery or bloody stools, stomach cramps, or fever during treatment or for up to two or more months after stopping treatment 
• Wheezing 

Cautions 

• Allergy: If you are allergic to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics, you should avoid taking Suprax DT. Be sure to inform your healthcare professional about any known allergies before starting the medication. 
• Drug Interactions: inform your healthcare professional about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements.  
• Kidney and Liver Function: If you have impaired kidney or liver function, your healthcare professional may need to adjust the dosage of Cefixime or monitor you more closely while you are taking the medication.  
• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare professional before taking Cefixime. They will be able to assess the potential risks and benefits of the medication in your specific situation. 
• Clostridium difficile Infection: Suprax DT, like other antibiotics, can potentially cause an overgrowth of a bacteria called Clostridium difficile. This can lead to a severe form of diarrhea called C. difficile-associated diarrhea.  
• Severe Skin Reactions: Rarely, Cefixime can cause severe allergic reactions that can affect the skin, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. If you develop a rash, blistering, peeling of the skin, or other signs of a severe skin reaction, seek immediate medical attention. 
• Asthma and Allergies: If you have a history of asthma or allergies, inform your healthcare professional before taking Suprax DT. Cefixime can rarely cause an allergic reaction that may manifest as difficulty breathing, wheezing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. 
• Resistance and Superinfection: Prolonged or repeated use of antibiotics, including Suprax, can sometimes result in the development of bacterial resistance. This means that the medication may become less effective against certain bacterial infections. Additionally, the use of Suprax DT can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the body, increasing the risk of developing a secondary infection, such as a yeast infection.  
• Use as Directed: Take Cefixime exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional. Do not skip doses or stop the medication early, even if you start to feel better.
