Description

Indications

Suprax Suspension is an oral suspension formulation of the antibiotic cefixime and is used to treat various bacterial infections. It can be indicated to treat various bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, middle ear infections, and gonorrhea. It contains the active ingredient cefixime, which belongs to a class of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics.

Cefixime works by targeting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Bacteria have a cell wall that provides structural support and protection. Cefixime interferes with the formation of the bacterial cell wall by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called transpeptidase. This enzyme is responsible for cross-linking the building blocks of the cell wall, called peptidoglycans, which gives the wall its strength.

Use and Dosage

Suprax Suspension should be taken by mouth with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure proper mixing of the medication. Use the provided measuring device to accurately measure the prescribed dose.

The dosage of Suprax Suspension can vary depending on the age, weight, and severity of the infection being treated. Follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. They will determine the appropriate dosage for your specific situation. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is already close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. In addition, stopping the medication prematurely can lead to the infection’s recurrence.

Store Suprax Suspension at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze the medication.

  • Drug interactions: Cefixime can interact with other medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications and supplements you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The safety of Suprax Suspension during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well-established. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Superinfection: Antibiotic treatment can sometimes lead to the growth of resistant bacteria or fungal infections. If you develop new symptoms or your infection does not improve while taking Suprax Suspension, inform your healthcare provider.
  • Gastrointestinal issues: Cefixime may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and indigestion. If you experience severe or persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.
  • Severe skin reactions: Although rare, cefixime can cause severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash, blistering, peeling skin, or other signs of a severe skin reaction.
  • Seizures: Cefixime may lower the seizure threshold in some individuals, increasing the risk of seizures. If you have a history of seizures or are at an increased risk, discuss it with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.
  • Clostridium difficile infection: Antibiotic use, including cefixime, can increase the risk of developing a Clostridium difficile infection, which causes severe diarrhea. If you experience persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, or blood in your stool, seek medical attention.
  • Decreased effectiveness of birth control: Cefixime may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control methods, such as pills, patches, or injections. Discuss alternative contraception methods with your healthcare provider.
