Drug Description

Indications

Synjardy XR is a prescribed medication used in conjunction with diet and exercise to enhance blood sugar management in adult patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Synjardy XR may also be prescribed to reduce the likelihood of mortality due to heart attack, stroke, or heart failure in adult patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and concurrent heart disease.

Comprising two active components, empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, and metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide, Synjardy XR works by restoring the body’s insulin response, increasing sugar removal by the kidneys, reducing liver sugar production, and decreasing sugar absorption in the stomach and intestines.

Uses and Dosage

Before taking Synjardy XR and with every prescription refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any queries or concerns.

The appropriate dosage of Synjardy XR is determined by the patient’s medical condition, response to treatment, and concurrent medications.

To mitigate potential side effects (e.g., diarrhea, nausea), your doctor might recommend starting this medication with a low dose and progressively elevating it. Adhere closely to your doctor’s guidance.

Typically, Synjardy XR is taken once daily in the morning with a meal, as prescribed by the doctor.

Synjardy XR tablets must be swallowed whole, not crushed, dissolved, or chewed. Breaking them apart can cause the entire dosage to be released at once, increasing the likelihood of experiencing adverse reactions.

Unless instructed otherwise by your doctor, adequate fluid intake must be maintained during medication usage.

For optimal results, take this medication regularly at around the same time each day.

Inform your doctor if your condition fails to improve or deteriorates (whether your blood sugar levels are excessively high or low).

Numerous medications can influence blood sugar levels, potentially complicating regulation. Before initiating, discontinuing, or altering any medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding its impact on blood sugar.

Monitor your blood sugar as advised by your physician, sharing both readings and any signs of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. Adjustments to your diabetes regimen, physical activity plan, or dietary intake may be necessary and should be discussed with your doctor.

Ensure that all laboratory personnel and medical professionals are aware of your usage of Synjardy XR, as it may result in a positive glucose test in your urine.

Before undergoing surgery or any procedure involving the administration of a dye through intravenous injection for X-rays or CT scans, it may be necessary to temporarily discontinue the use of Synjardy XR.

Adhere to your doctor’s guidance regarding the usage of Synjardy XR if you are pregnant or become pregnant, as diabetes management is crucial during pregnancy. This medication should not be taken in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.

Metformin may alter the menstrual cycle, promoting ovulation and elevating the chance of conception. Seek guidance from a healthcare professional or pharmacist regarding the implementation of effective contraception during Synjardy XR treatment.

Small amounts of metformin can be transferred to breast milk, whereas the transfer of empagliflozin to breast milk is not yet determined. Consult with your doctor before engaging in breastfeeding.
