Indications 

Vasodilan is an oral medication primarily used to improve blood flow and treat conditions such as peripheral vascular disease and navicular syndrome in horses. It may also be used off-label to prevent or treat preterm labor in pregnant women.  

Vasodilan contains the active ingredient isoxsuprine. It belongs to the group of medicines called vasodilators. It works by increasing the size of blood vessels. This effect may help to decrease symptoms such as cold hands and feet, numbness, tingling, and decreased memory or judgment. 

Use and Dosage 

Isoxsuprine is taken by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 3 to 4 times daily. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet unless instructed by your doctor. Use the tablet regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. 

The recommended dosage of Isoxsuprine can vary depending on the specific medical condition being treated. However, here are some general recommendations: 

• For peripheral vascular disease: The recommended oral dose is 10-20 mg taken three to four times per day. 
• For tocolysis (prevention of preterm labor): The treatment group in one study received 10 mg of oral isoxsuprine every 8 hours during hospitalization and until 34 weeks of gestation at home. 
• For horses: The recommended dose is 0.6 mg/kg orally twice daily for 3 weeks, with the possibility of increasing the dose to 1.2 mg/kg orally twice daily if no response is seen. 

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Cautions 

• Allergic reactions: If you have a known allergy to isoxsuprine or any other ingredients in Vasodilan, avoid using the tablet. 
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Isoxsuprine has been used to prevent premature labor, but its use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare professional. They will weigh the potential benefits against any potential risks. 
• Cardiovascular conditions: Isoxsuprine is a vasodilator, meaning it relaxes and widens blood vessels. However, if you have certain cardiovascular conditions such as a heart attack, congestive heart failure, or severe coronary artery disease, caution should be exercised when using Vasodilan. 
• Hypotension (low blood pressure): Isoxsuprine can cause a decrease in blood pressure. If you already have low blood pressure or are taking medications that lower blood pressure, caution should be exercised as it may lead to further lowering of blood pressure. 
• Liver or kidney impairment: If you have liver or kidney impairment, use Isoxsuprine with caution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Adjustments to the dosage may be necessary. 
• Diabetes: Vasodilan may affect blood sugar levels, so individuals with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar closely while using the tablet. 
• Bleeding disorders: Vasodilan may increase the risk of bleeding. If you have a bleeding disorder or are taking medications that affect blood clotting, use Vasodilan with caution and under the supervision of a healthcare professional. 
• Surgery: If you have an upcoming surgery, inform your healthcare provider about your use of Vasodilan. They may advise you to discontinue the medication temporarily before the procedure. 
• Drug interactions: Vasodilan may interact with other medications, including blood pressure medications, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and certain antidepressants. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions. 
• Children and elderly: Safety and effectiveness of Isoxsuprine in children have not been established. For older adults, caution may be needed due to an increased risk of side effects such as dizziness or low blood pressure. 
• Alcohol and tobacco: Consumption of alcohol and tobacco may worsen the side effects of Vasodilan, such as dizziness and low blood pressure. Limit or avoid alcohol and tobacco use while taking the tablet.
