Drug Description

Indications

Salofalk Enema is a prescription medication used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, specifically ulcerative colitis. It is effective in treating mild to moderate forms of ulcerative colitis, including proctitis (inflammation of the rectum) and left-sided colitis.

Salofalk Enema works by reducing inflammation in the lining of the rectum and colon. The active ingredient, mesalamine, is an aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory agent that acts locally on the inflamed tissue. It helps to relieve the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, such as rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Salofalk Enema is administered rectally and is used to control the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, but it does not cure the condition. It is also not effective for treating Crohn’s disease, another form of IBD that can affect any part of the digestive tract.

Use and Dosage

Salofalk Enema is administered rectally. The usual dose is one enema (4 grams) once daily, preferably at bedtime. The enema should be retained in the bowel for at least 1 to 3 hours, or as directed by your healthcare provider.

To use Salofalk Enema, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you are in a comfortable position, such as lying on your left side or in the knee-chest position.
  2. Shake the enema bottle well before use to ensure proper mixing of the medication.
  3. Remove the protective cover from the applicator tip.
  4. Gently insert the applicator tip into the rectum. If needed, you can use a water-based lubricant to help with insertion.
  5. Slowly squeeze the bottle to release the enema medication into the rectum. Apply steady pressure to ensure that most of the enema is discharged.
  6. Once the enema is administered, remove the applicator from the rectum while continuing to squeeze the bottle.
  7. Remain in the same position for a few minutes to allow the medication to distribute within the rectum. Use the enema at bedtime to allow for a longer retention time.
  8. After using the enema, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  9. Dispose of the enema bottle and any unused medication as per the instructions provided.

If you miss a dose of Salofalk Enema, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
