Indications 

Aripiprazole, commonly known as Abilify, is an atypical antipsychotic drug utilized for the treatment of various mental health and mood disorders including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette’s syndrome, and irritability associated with autistic disorder.  

This medication operates by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to improved concentration and a reduction in hallucinations. 

In combination with other medications, Abilify has  been utilized to treat depression. The medication has demonstrated efficacy in facilitating clearer thinking and promoting positive outlook, while reducing nervousness and encouraging active participation in daily life.  

Aripiprazole is shown to be effective in treating severe mood swings and reducing the frequency of these episodes. 

Uses and Dosage 

Aripiprazole is a medication utilized for the treatment of psychotic conditions, such as schizophrenia, in adults and children who are at least 13 years old.  

The medication may be used alone or in conjunction with a mood stabilizing agent for the treatment of bipolar I disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.  

In adults, Abilify is used in combination with antidepressant medication for the treatment of major depressive disorder. 

Furthermore, Abilify has been approved for use in children who are at least 6 years old, to treat Tourette’s disorder, as well as symptoms related to autistic disorder such as irritability, aggression, mood swings, temper tantrums, and self-injury. 

Before starting treatment with aripiprazole, and every time you refill your prescription, review the accompanying Medication Guide and Patient Information Leaflet supplied by your pharmacist, and consult with your physician or pharmacist regarding any queries or concerns.  

The recommended administration of aripiprazole is oral and can be taken with or without food, as instructed by the treating physician.  

The individualized dosage of aripiprazole is based on several factors, including the patient’s medical status, response to treatment, age, and any concomitant medications. 

Side Effects 

Common Side Effects

• Dizziness 
• Lightheadedness 
• Drowsiness 
• Nausea 
• Vomiting 
• Tiredness 
• Excess saliva/drooling 
• Blurred vision 
• Weight gain 
• Constipation 
• Headache 
• Trouble sleeping 

If any of these effects persist or worsen, immediately inform your doctor or pharmacist. 

Severe Side Effects

Report serious adverse reactions promptly to your doctor, including: 

• Fainting 
• Mental/mood changes (such as increased anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts) 
• Trouble swallowing 
• Restlessness (especially in the legs) 
• Shaking (tremor) 
• Muscle spasm 
• Mask-like expression of the face 
• Seizures 
• Difficulty controlling certain urges (such as gambling, sex, eating or shopping) 
• Interrupted breathing during sleep. 

Caution 

Abilify is not approved for use in older adults with dementia-related psychosis. 

Suicidal Thoughts: 

• People with depression or mental illness may experience thoughts of suicide. 
• Some young people may have an increased risk of suicidal thoughts when starting a medicine for depression. 
• Report any sudden changes in mood or behavior or thoughts of suicide to your doctor immediately. 

Antidepressant Use: 

• If you are also using an antidepressant medicine, do not discontinue it suddenly. 

Warning Symptoms: 

• Stop using Abilify and seek medical attention immediately if you experience: 
  • Fever with stiff muscles and rapid heart rate 
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements 
  • Sudden symptoms such as numbness or weakness, severe headache, and problems with vision, speech, or balance.
