Alka-Seltzer is a highly regarded over-the-counter medication that contains a potent combination of active ingredients including Anhydrous Citric Acid (1000mg), Aspirin (325mg), and Sodium Bicarbonate (1916 mg).

Its versatility in addressing symptoms such as heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, headache, and body aches, has established Alka-Seltzer as a trusted and widely used product in households and healthcare facilities around the world.  

Uses and Dosage 

The utilization of Alka-Seltzer, a pharmaceutical composition composed of aspirin, citric acid, and sodium bicarbonate, must be done strictly as directed by a medical professional.  

Prior to usage, this is imperative to thoroughly read and comprehend all relevant information and instructions provided. 

When taking Alka-Seltzer, one may opt to do so either with or without food. If ingestion causes gastrointestinal discomfort, the medication  is recommended to take with a meal.  

To prepare the medication, dissolve the required number of tablets in 1/2 cup (4 ounces/120 mL) of water. Ensure that the tablets have completely dissolved prior to ingestion.  

Important to note that swallowing the tablets whole is not recommended. After the tablets have fully dissolved, rinse the cup with additional water and drink to complete the dose. 

Side Effects 

Possible for individuals to experience severe and potentially life-threatening side effects when taking medication. If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention immediately as they may be indicative of a serious adverse reaction: 

Allergic Reactions

  • Ringing in the ears

Important Considerations for Alka-Seltzer (Aspirin, Citric Acid, and Sodium Bicarbonate) Use: 

• Inform all healthcare providers of your use of Alka-Seltzer. 
• Avoid using Alka-Seltzer before or after heart bypass surgery. 
• Do not give to children and teenagers with flu-like symptoms, chickenpox, or other viral infections due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome. 
• Do not exceed the prescribed dose and duration as advised by the doctor. 
• Be cautious of injury and excessive bleeding, and consider using a soft toothbrush and electric razor. 
• Consult with the doctor before drinking alcohol or smoking. 
• Discuss with the doctor if you are on a low-sodium or sodium-free diet or have phenylketonuria. 
• Be aware of the increased risk of severe and sometimes fatal stomach or bowel problems, especially in older people or those with a history of such problems. 
• Do not give to children under 12 years old without consulting the doctor. 
• Exercise caution if over 60 years old. 
• If pregnant or planning to become pregnant, seek medical attention immediately.
