Description

Indications

Aricept, known as donepezil hydrochloride, is an orally administered medication specifically indicated for the management of Alzheimer’s type dementia.

This prescription medication has been shown to be efficacious for patients presenting with mild, moderate, and severe forms of Alzheimer’s disease. Aricept has been observed to enhance functional ability, memory, and cognitive awareness in affected individuals.

Uses and Dosage

Before starting to take donepezil, carefully read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.

This medication is taken orally, with or without food, usually once daily just before bedtime, as directed by your doctor. If you experience difficulty sleeping (insomnia), discuss with your doctor about switching to a morning dose.

For individuals taking the 23-milligram strength tablets, swallow the tablets whole and not to split, crush or chew them. Such actions may increase the risk of side effects.

Dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce the risk of side effects such as nausea and diarrhea, your doctor will start you on a low dose and gradually increase your dosage over several weeks to months. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully, and not to increase your dose or use this medication more frequently than prescribed.

If you fail to take donepezil for seven or more days in a row, contact your doctor before resuming use. You may need to start at a lower dosage to reduce the risk of side effects.

For optimal benefit, use this medication regularly, taking it at the same time every day. Do not stop taking it unless instructed to do so by your doctor. It may take several weeks before the full benefits of this medication are noticed.

Caution

Prior to commencing the use of this prescription drug, disclose your complete medical history to your physician, including any history of gastrointestinal diseases, breathing problems, seizures, fainting, and difficulty urinating.

Certain medical conditions may affect your response to treatment. Inform your physician about all prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking, as they may interact with this acetylcholinesterase inhibitor.

While taking this medication, be vigilant for any signs of an allergic reaction. If you have a known allergy to donepezil or any of the inactive ingredients in each tablet, avoid this oral drug. If you experience symptoms of hypersensitivity, such as hives, severe dizziness, skin rashes, swelling of the face, and difficulty breathing, immediately suspend use of the medication and call your local medical emergency line.

This medication may cause QT prolongation. Seek emergency medical help if you experience palpitations or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, and fainting. To avoid this condition, remain hydrated and avoid taking diuretics. You must monitor your magnesium and potassium levels, as low levels could further increase the risk of QT prolongation.

Dizziness, drowsiness, and lightheadedness are among the side effects associated with this prescription drug. Limit alcohol intake, as alcohol may exacerbate these adverse effects. You must exercise caution when engaging in activities that require alertness, such as operating machinery or driving.

Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should only use this drug when necessary, as there are currently no definitive studies that determine whether it can cause harm to unborn and breastfed infants. Remember that the potential benefits of the medication should outweigh any potential risk.
