Description
Indications
Avelox, or moxifloxacin hydrochloride, is a potent antibacterial medication indicated for the treatment of infections caused by designated susceptible bacteria among adults.
This drug is specifically designed to treat a variety of infections such as community-acquired pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, skin infections, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by susceptible bacteria.
To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria, Avelox is only used to treat and prevent infections that are proven to be caused by susceptible bacteria. This quinolone antibiotic works by inhibiting topoisomerase II or DNA gyrase, and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. Consequently, it can effectively treat bacterial infections by preventing the growth of bacteria.
Uses and Dosage
Prior to taking moxifloxacin, read the Medication Guide and Patient Information Leaflet, provided by their pharmacist. In case of any queries, patients should consult their doctor or pharmacist.
The medication should be taken orally with or without food, once daily, as instructed by the doctor. The appropriate dosage and treatment duration will depend on the patient’s medical condition and response to the drug. Patients are advised to drink plenty of fluids, unless otherwise directed by their doctor.
Consume this medication at least 4 hours before or 8 hours after consuming other products that may interact with it, potentially reducing its efficacy. Patients should check with their pharmacist about other products they are using, including quinapril, sucralfate, vitamins/minerals, and products containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium.
To ensure optimal efficacy, take this antibiotic at regular intervals. To help with medication adherence, patients should take the medication at the same time(s) each day.
Patients must continue taking this medication for the full prescribed period, even if their symptoms subside after a few days. Discontinuing the medication prematurely could cause the infection to recur. If a patient’s condition persists or worsens, they should inform their doctor.

Caution
Disclose your complete medical history to your physician before starting Avelox treatment, including any history of nerve problems, myasthenia gravis, joint or tendon problems, heart problems, liver disease, seizure disorder, blood vessel problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, mental disorders, and genetic conditions like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
Certain medical conditions may affect your body’s response to treatment, inform your doctor about all prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, as they may interact with moxifloxacin.
Here are some essential things to keep in mind while on Avelox treatment:
- Do not take Avelox if you have a known allergy to moxifloxacin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any inactive ingredients Avelox may contain. Be aware of signs of hypersensitivity reactions like severe dizziness, itching, skin rashes, swelling of the face, and breathing trouble.
- Avelox may cause QT prolongation. To avoid this, avoid taking water pills or diuretics and stay hydrated. Monitor your potassium and magnesium levels, as hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia could trigger QT prolongation.
- Avelox may cause changes in blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, always monitor your blood sugar level for either hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Symptoms of hyperglycemia are increased thirst and urination, while symptoms of hypoglycemia are sweating, shaking, palpitations, and severe dizziness. Report to your physician immediately if any of these conditions occur.
- Dizziness and lightheadedness are potential side effects of Avelox. Use caution when doing activities that require alertness, such as driving and operating machinery. Limit alcohol consumption as it could worsen the side effects.
- Do not get vaccinated or immunized, especially with live bacterial vaccines. Avelox may interact and cause a significant decrease in the vaccine’s efficacy.
- Avelox may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit sun exposure and avoid indoor tanning. If going outdoors, wear protective clothing and apply sunblock cream.
- Pregnant and breastfeeding individuals should only use Avelox if clearly needed, after discussing the potential risks and benefits with their doctor.
Remember to contact your doctor immediately if you experience any severe side effects or allergic reactions while on Avelox treatment.
