Indications 

Bactrim DS is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that can treat various infections caused by sensitive bacteria. It contains two active ingredients, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim, which work together to inhibit bacterial growth and replication. 

Some of the common infections that Bactrim DS is used to treat include: 

• Upper and lower respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia 
• Renal and urinary tract infections, such as pyelonephritis and cystitis 
• Genital tract infections, such as gonorrhea and chlamydia 
• Gastrointestinal tract infections, such as traveler’s diarrhea and gastroenteritis 
• Skin and wound infections, such as cellulitis and impetigo 
• Septicaemia is a severe bloodstream infection caused by bacteria 

Bactrim DS is ineffective against all types of bacteria and may not be appropriate for certain infections or individuals with certain medical conditions. Always best to consult a healthcare provider to determine the proper treatment for a specific infection. 

Uses and Dosage 

Adhere to the directions on the prescription label and review all accompanying medication guides or instruction sheets. The medication should be taken precisely as directed. This drug advisable to consume ample fluids while using this medication to prevent the development of kidney stones. 

In the case of children, the dosage of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim depends on their weight; only the recommended dose should be administered. Kindly complete the full prescribed course of medication even if symptoms improve rapidly, as skipping doses can heighten the risk of developing medication-resistant infections. 

This medication is ineffective against viral infections like the flu or the common cold. Frequent medical testing may be required while using this medication. Please notify any healthcare provider treating you that you are currently taking sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, as it may influence the outcome of specific medical tests. Store the medication at room temperature, keeping it from moisture, heat, and light.

• Red skin lesions, often with a purple center

• Sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on the lips

• Swollen or painful glands

Cautions 

Patients are advised to use an effective form of birth control to prevent pregnancy and immediately inform their doctor if they become pregnant while using the medicine. Severe skin reactions, liver problems, low platelet count, and electrolyte problems may occur. Patients should be aware of the possibility of severe diarrhea and allergic reactions. Before having any medical tests, patients should inform the doctor that they are taking medicine. Patients should not take other drugs unless they have discussed them with their doctor.
