Description

Indications

Biaxin, known by its generic name clarithromycin, is an oral antibiotic that is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These infections may include acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, skin infections, acute otitis media, disseminated mycobacterial infections, and H. Pylori infections. It should be noted that Biaxin is only effective in treating bacterial infections and not viral infections.

This macrolide antimicrobial exerts its therapeutic effect by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria. Specifically, it binds to subunit 50S of the bacterial ribosome, thereby inhibiting peptidyl transferase activity and interfering with amino acid translocation during protein synthesis and translation.

Uses and Dosage

Prior to taking this oral antibiotic, read the medication information booklet included with the product. Refrain from taking Biaxin until you have completely comprehended the drug information and instructions within the guide provided. If you require further medical advice or have any questions regarding this treatment, kindly consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Biaxin should be taken orally, usually twice a day, either with or without food, or as directed by your physician. In the event of an upset stomach, it may be necessary to take the medication with food. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not broken, split, crushed, or chewed to prevent the abrupt release of the drug.

Take Biaxin consistently to achieve the best possible outcome. Make a dosing schedule with even intervals. Your dosage and length of treatment will be determined by your medical condition, response to the treatment, and for children, their weight. Continue taking Biaxin until the entire duration of treatment is completed to prevent the recurrence of the infection.

Caution

Prior to taking clarithromycin, inform your physician or pharmacist about any allergies to the medication or other macrolide antibiotics, such as erythromycin and azithromycin, or other allergens. This product may contain inactive elements that could cause allergic reactions or other complications. Kindly consult with your pharmacist for more information.

Inform your physician or pharmacist about your medical history, especially any history of liver disease (including liver problems due to past use of clarithromycin), kidney disease, heart disease (coronary artery disease, heart attack), or a particular type of muscle disease (myasthenia gravis), before using this medication.

Clarithromycin has the potential to cause a heart rhythm condition known as QT prolongation. In rare cases, QT prolongation may cause severe symptoms, such as a fast or irregular heartbeat and severe dizziness that require immediate medical attention.

The likelihood of QT prolongation may increase if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other medications that may lead to QT prolongation. Before using clarithromycin, inform your physician or pharmacist of all medications you are taking and any heart-related problems you may have, including heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG, or a family history of such problems or sudden cardiac death.

Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may increase the likelihood of QT prolongation. If you have conditions such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting, or use certain drugs such as diuretics or “water pills,” the risk of QT prolongation may increase. Discuss the use of clarithromycin with your doctor for safe usage.

Clarithromycin may decrease the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines such as the typhoid vaccine. Before undergoing any immunizations or vaccinations, kindly notify your healthcare professional that you are using clarithromycin.

Before undergoing any surgery, inform your physician or dentist about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, and herbal products.
