Drug Description

Indications

Ciloxan Ophthalmic Solution is used to treat bacterial eye infections, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) and corneal ulcers (open sore on the cornea).

Belonging to the class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, Ciloxan Ophthalmic Solution works by eliminating the bacteria responsible for the infection.

Uses and Dosage

Before starting treatment with Ciloxan Ophthalmic Solution and with every prescription refill, carefully review the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for any queries or concerns.

The prescribed number of drops and frequency of administration of Ciloxan Ophthalmic Solution varies depending on the infection being treated.

For corneal ulcers, the typical dosing regimen is as follows:

  • First six hours: Instill two drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes.
  • Remainder of the first day: Continue with two drops every 30 minutes.
  • Second day: Administer two drops hourly.
  • Third through fourteenth day: Apply two drops every four hours.
  • Treatment may be extended if corneal re-epithelialization has not occurred after 14 days.

For bacteria conjunctivitis, the typical dosing regimen is as follows:

  • First two days: Instill one or two drops in the conjunctival sac(s) every two hours while awake.
  • For the next five days: Instill one or two drops every four hours while awake.

To correctly administer the eye drops, follow these steps:

  1. Begin by washing your hands thoroughly.
    • To prevent contamination, do not touch the dropper tip and avoid contact between the dropper tip and your eye or any other surface.
  2. Tilt your head backward, look upward, and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pouch.
  3. Hold the dropper above your eye and dispense one drop into the pouch.
  4. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes while applying gentle pressure with a finger near the corner of your eye to prevent medication drainage. Avoid blinking or rubbing your eyes during this time.
  5. Use a tissue to wipe away any excess liquid from your face.
  6. If you need to apply more than one drop in the same eye, wait at least 5 minutes before instilling the next drop.
  7. Replace and securely tighten the cap on the dropper bottle. Do not wipe or rinse the dropper tip.
  8. Finally, rewash your hands to remove any residual medication.

To achieve optimal outcomes, adhere strictly to the prescribed instructions for Ciloxan Ophthalmic Solution. Consult your doctor before making any adjustments to the recommended number of drops or usage frequency.

Complete the entire course of medication as directed, regardless of symptom improvement, within a few days. Ceasing prematurely could foster bacterial growth and trigger a relapse of the infection.
