Description

Indications

Docusate is a medication utilized for the treatment of occasional constipation. Certain medications and underlying conditions may exacerbate the likelihood of constipation.

As a stool softener, docusate is frequently the initial option considered for the prevention and management of this type of constipation.

Docusate is particularly useful in instances where straining during bowel movements is contraindicated, such as post-heart attack or post-surgery.

This medication works by enhancing the water absorption capacity of the stool, leading to a softer consistency and easier evacuation.

Uses and Dosage

Follow all directions on the product package and consult with your physician or pharmacist if there are any questions.

This medication is typically administered orally, ideally at bedtime, with a full glass (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) of water or juice, or as instructed by your physician. The dose is determined based on your medical status and response to therapy, and may need to be adjusted if diarrhea occurs.

If utilizing the liquid form of the medication, measure the dose accurately using a specialized measuring device/spoon, avoiding the use of household utensils to ensure an accurate dose.

For drops, measure the medication using the dropper provided or a dose-measuring spoon or device. To prevent throat irritation and mask a bitter taste, mix the syrup, liquid, or drops with 4 to 8 ounces of fruit juice, milk, or infant formula.

Use this medication only when necessary and to not exceed usage for more than one week unless directed by a physician.
