Description

Indications

Cymbalta, a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant (SSNRI), modulates neurotransmitters in the brain that may be imbalanced in individuals with depression.

Indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder in adults, and in pediatric patients aged 7 years and above.

Cymbalta is prescribed for the management of chronic pain conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, chronic musculoskeletal pain including low back pain and osteoarthritis pain, and fibromyalgia in adult patients as well as in pediatric patients aged 13 years and above.

Uses and Dosage

Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking Cymbalta. Ensure that you follow all directions indicated on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may adjust your dose periodically.

Taking Cymbalta in higher doses or more frequently than prescribed does not enhance its efficacy and may elevate the likelihood of side effects. The capsule should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed, chewed, broken or opened.

It may be taken with or without food and your blood pressure needs to be regularly monitored. Notify your doctor of any alterations in sexual function, such as a loss of interest in sex, difficulties having an orgasm, or (in men) erectile dysfunction or ejaculation problems. Sexual problems are treatable.

It may take up to four weeks for symptoms to improve. Do not discontinue duloxetine suddenly, as this could cause undesirable symptoms such as agitation, confusion, tingling or electric shock sensations. Seek guidance from your doctor before ceasing use of the medication. Store at room temperature and avoid exposure to moisture and heat.

Side Effects

Cymbalta, a prescription drug used for depression and anxiety, can cause mild or severe side effects. The following are some of the key side effects that may occur while taking Cymbalta. However, these lists do not contain all the possible side effects:

Caution

Prior to starting this antidepressant, provide your complete medical history to your healthcare provider, specifically any history of suicide attempts, psychiatric disorders, bleeding problems, high blood pressure, stomach problems, liver disease, kidney disease, glaucoma, and seizures.

Certain medical conditions may have a significant impact on how you respond to treatment. Inform your doctor about all prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, or herbal products you are taking as they may interact with duloxetine.

When taking this medication, be vigilant for signs of an allergic reaction. If you have a known allergy to duloxetine or any of the inactive ingredients in the capsule, do not take the oral drug.

Discontinue medication and seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a hypersensitivity reaction, such as skin rashes, swelling of the face, severe dizziness, hives, and difficulty breathing.

Monitor your blood pressure and blood sugar levels regularly while taking this medication, as they may be affected. If you develop hypertension or an increase in blood sugar level, contact your doctor immediately. It may be necessary to adjust your other medications.

As drowsiness, dizziness, and changes in vision are among the side effects of this drug, avoid alcoholic beverages and exercise caution when engaging in activities that require alertness or clear vision, such as operating machinery or driving.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid this SNRI as it may cause bleeding and can pass into breast milk, potentially harming the baby.
