Indications 

The primary purpose of this medication is to address various skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, allergies, and rashes. By mitigating swelling (inflammation), itching, and redness, mometasone effectively alleviates symptoms. It falls under the classification of a medium-strength corticosteroid. The medication is offered in multiple formulations, including cream, ointment, and lotion (solution). The selection of the appropriate product type depends on the specific skin condition and the corresponding area of the body to be treated, a decision best made by your doctor. 

Uses and Dosage 

For optimal and safe usage of this medication, it should be applied exclusively to specific areas of the skin. Refrain from using it on the face, groin, underarms, or for diaper rash unless specifically instructed by your doctor. 

Prior to application, ensure that you wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Clean and dry the affected area of the skin. Apply the medication as directed by your doctor, typically in the form of a thin film, once daily to the affected area. Gently rub it in. Unless advised by your doctor, do not cover the treated area with bandages or dressings. 

After applying the medication, avoid immediately washing or rinsing it off. However, kindly wash your hands with soap and water after each use unless the medication is being used to treat the hands. Take care to prevent the medication from coming into contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth. If accidental contact occurs, rinse the affected area thoroughly with water and consult your doctor if any irritation persists. 

To derive the maximum benefit from this medication, adhere to a regular usage schedule. Try to apply it at the same time every day to help remember. Avoid applying excessive amounts of the medication, using it more frequently, or extending the duration of use beyond the prescribed guidelines. Doing so will not expedite the improvement of your condition and may increase the risk of experiencing side effects. 

If your condition does not show signs of improvement after two weeks of treatment or worsens, inform your doctor. 

Side Effects 

Common Side Effects

Application of this medication may result in a transient occurrence of:  

• Burning 
• Itching 
• Stinging, typically of short duration 

Severe Side Effects

Serious side effects with this medication are uncommon, as reported by a majority of individuals using it. However, if any of the following unlikely but serious side effects manifest, immediate communication with your doctor is advised:  

• Development of stretch marks 
• Skin thinning or discoloration 
• Occurrence of acne 
• Presence of small red bumps on the skin (folliculitis) 

In rare cases, there is a possibility of the medication being absorbed into the bloodstream, which can result in excessive corticosteroid effects. Such side effects are more commonly observed in children and individuals using this medication over an extended period or on extensive skin areas. 

Urgently inform your doctor if any of the following side effects occur:  

• Unusual or extreme tiredness 
• Unexplained weight loss 
• Persistent headaches 
• Swelling of the ankles or feet 
• Increased thirst or urination 
• Any vision problems 

Cautions 

Please inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, including allergies to mometasone or other substances present in the product. Inactive ingredients in the medication may also cause allergic reactions or other complications. For more information, consult your pharmacist. 

Prior to using this medication, discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of poor blood circulation, diabetes, or immune system problems. 

Corticosteroids can potentially worsen and complicate skin infections. If you have a skin infection, promptly inform your doctor so that appropriate treatment can be provided. Notify your doctor promptly if your condition does not improve or if you experience worsening skin symptoms. 

In rare cases, the prolonged or extensive use of corticosteroid medications can hinder your body’s response to physical stress. Prior to undergoing surgery, emergency treatment, or in the event of a serious illness/injury, inform your doctor or dentist about your current use or recent use of this medication. 

Before undergoing any surgical procedure, disclose to your doctor or dentist all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products. 

While long-term use of this medication may potentially temporarily slow down a child’s growth.  You should have regular check-ups with your doctor to monitor your child’s height. 

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
