Description

Indications

Imodium is an over-the-counter medication that is used for the relief of diarrhea symptoms. The medication contains loperamide as its active ingredient, which works by slowing down the muscles in the intestines, resulting in firmer stools.

The gastrointestinal tract is responsible for the movement of food and the absorption of nutrients and water through the intestines. When the gut muscles contract too quickly, food passes through the system too fast, leading to frequent, watery bowel movements that cause dehydration and low levels of electrolytes.

By slowing down muscle contractions in the gut, Imodium helps to slow the movement of food through the digestive tract. This allows the intestines to absorb fluids and nutrients, including electrolytes, which are necessary for proper body function. As a result, bowel movements become less frequent, more solid, and smaller after taking Imodium. Imodium can be taken as soon as diarrhea symptoms are experienced to alleviate diarrhea.

Uses and Dosage

If you are using this over-the-counter medication for self-treatment, carefully read the directions on the product package prior to use. However, if a healthcare professional has prescribed this medication, follow the directions on the prescription label and as instructed by the doctor.

The medication should be taken by mouth, usually after each occurrence of loose stool, or as directed by a healthcare professional.

The appropriate dosage is based on the individual’s medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage is also determined by their age and weight.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Tiredness
  • Constipation

If any of these effects last or worsen, it is important to tell your doctor promptly.

Severe Side Effects

Your doctor has prescribed this medication because they have determined that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Most people using this medication do not experience serious side effects. However, stop taking this medication and get medical help immediately if you experience any very serious side effects, such as:

  • Severe constipation/nausea/vomiting
  • Stomach/abdominal pain
  • Uncomfortable fullness of the stomach/abdomen
  • Fast/irregular heartbeat
  • Severe dizziness or fainting

Allergic Reactions

Although a very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare, seek medical help immediately if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as:

  • Rash
  • Itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
  • Severe dizziness or trouble breathing

Caution

Before taking loperamide, disclose any allergies to your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Inactive ingredients contained within the medication have the potential to cause allergic reactions or other complications. For further information, speak to your pharmacist.

If you have pre-existing health concerns, consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist before using loperamide. These conditions may include:

  • Abdominal/stomach pain without diarrhea
  • Megacolon
  • Ileus
  • Abdominal distention
  • Black/tarry stool
  • Blood/mucus in stool
  • High fever
  • HIV infection/AIDS
  • Liver issues
  • Certain stomach/intestinal infections (e.g. Salmonella, Shigella)
  • Specific types of bowel disease (e.g. acute ulcerative colitis)

Loperamide may result in QT prolongation, a condition that impacts heart rhythm. In rare cases, QT prolongation may lead to a serious (occasionally fatal) fast/irregular heartbeat or other symptoms (e.g. severe dizziness, fainting) that necessitate prompt medical attention.

The potential of QT prolongation may be elevated if you have particular medical conditions or are taking certain drugs that can cause QT prolongation.

Before using loperamide, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist of any drugs you are taking and if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Heart problems (heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG)
  • Family history of certain heart problems (QT prolongation in the EKG, sudden cardiac death)

This drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Using alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can intensify these effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or undertaking any task that requires vigilance until you can do so safely.

Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages. If you are using marijuana (cannabis), discuss this with your doctor.

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used if absolutely necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
