Drug Description

Indications

Lexapro ODT (Escitalopram ODT) is a medication used primarily for the treatment of depression. It can be used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Lexapro ODT   belongs to the class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, which helps regulate mood. By blocking the reuptake of serotonin, Lexapro ODT allows more serotonin to remain in the brain, leading to improved mood.

Use and Dosage

Lexapro ODT is an orally-disintegrating tablet designed to dissolve quickly on the tongue. Place the tablet on your tongue and let it dissolve without water. You should not eat or drink anything for at least 10 minutes before and after taking Lexapro ODT to allow the tablet to dissolve properly. The tablet is designed to be taken as a whole. Do not break, crush, or chew the tablet. Take Lexapro ODT at the same time every day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your body.

The recommended dosage of Lexapro ODT (Escitalopram ODT) may vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated. The recommended dosage for Lexapro ODT (Escitalopram ODT) is 10 mg per day for adults. The maximum recommended dose is 20 mg per day. It may take several weeks for Lexapro ODT to have a noticeable effect. Continue taking the medication as prescribed, even if you start feeling better.

If you miss a dose, skip it, and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Cautions

  • Withdrawal Symptoms: Abruptly stopping Lexapro ODT may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headache, and irritability, insomnia, or electric shock sensations. Gradually reduce the dosage under the guidance of a healthcare professional when discontinuing the medication.
  • Changes in Heart Rhythm: Lexapro ODT may cause changes in heart rhythm, particularly in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions. Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart problems or if you experience irregular heartbeats, fainting, or dizziness while taking Lexapro ODT.
  • Hyponatremia: In rare cases, Lexapro ODT may lead to a condition called hyponatremia, which is characterized by low levels of sodium in the blood. Symptoms may include headache, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, confusion, weakness, and seizures. Inform your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.
  • Bone Health: Some studies suggest that long-term use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Lexapro ODT may be associated with a slightly increased risk of bone fractures, particularly in older adults. Discuss any concerns about bone health with your healthcare provider.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: Lexapro ODT may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision, which can impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. Use caution until you know how the medication affects you.
  • Interactions with Other Medications: Lexapro ODT may interact with certain medications, including other antidepressants, blood thinners, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and some herbal supplements. Inform your doctor about all the medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): Do not take Lexapro ODT if you are currently taking or have recently taken MAOIs, as serious drug interactions can occur. MAOIs include medications such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.
  • Serotonin Syndrome: Lexapro ODT increases the levels of serotonin in the brain. Taking Lexapro ODT with other medications that also increase serotonin levels, such as certain antidepressants, migraine medications, or street drugs like MDMA (ecstasy), can lead to a potentially life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome. Symptoms may include agitation, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, fever, muscle stiffness, tremors, and nausea.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the risks and benefits of taking Lexapro ODT with your doctor. Weigh the potential risks to the fetus or infant against the potential benefits of the medication.
  • Suicidal Thoughts or Behavior: Antidepressant medications, including escitalopram, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults. Close supervision by a healthcare professional is necessary when starting or changing the dose of Lexapro ODT.
