Indications 

Mestinon is a prescription medicine used to improve muscle strength in patients with a certain muscle disease called myasthenia gravis.  

As a cholinesterase inhibitor, Mestinon reduces the degradation of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction, thereby augmenting nerve-muscle signaling and alleviating muscle weakness. Acetylcholine is a natural substance in the body needed for normal muscle function. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before taking Mestinon and every time you get a refill, thoroughly read its medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have questions or clarifications, consult your physician or pharmacist. 

The dosage and frequency of intake of Mestinon should be adjusted based on the patient’s individual needs. 

Typically, ten 60 mg tablets of Mestinon are taken daily and spaced out for optimal relief during peak need. Severe cases may require up to 25 tablets, whereas mild cases may only need one to six tablets daily. 

Follow your doctor’s instructions precisely when taking Mestinon. Do not exceed or reduce the recommended dose or take it more frequently than prescribed. 

Do not discontinue intake of Mestinon without consulting your doctor, even if you are feeling better. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the possible side effects of Mestinon. Promptly tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of them persist or worsen. 

Common Side Effects 

• Stomach pain 
• Nausea 
• Vomiting 
• Diarrhea 
• Muscle cramps 
• Twitching 
• Sweating 
• Increased salivation 
• Cough with mucus 
• Rash 
• Blurred vision 

Serious Side Effects 

• Extreme muscle weakness 
• Loss of movement in any part of the body 
• Weak or shallow breathing 
• Slurred speech 
• Vision problems 
• Worsening or no improvement in the symptoms of myasthenia gravis 

Call your doctor right away if you experience any of the severe symptoms listed above. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Mestinon can occur. Get immediate medical attention if you observe the following symptoms: 

• Rash 
• Severe dizziness 
• Trouble breathing 
• Facial, tongue, or throat itching/swelling

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Mestinon, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist of any known hypersensitivities, particularly to pyridostigmine, any other medications, or any ingredients present in Mestinon tablet. 

To ensure that Mestinon is safe for you, disclose your medical history to your doctor, particularly of:  

• Stomach or intestinal blockage 
• Urinary blockage 
• Lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD 
• Kidney disease 
• Slow or irregular heartbeat 

Other drugs may interact with Mestinon. To avoid drug interactions, inform your doctor and pharmacist about all your medications, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. 

Mestinon may induce drowsiness and blur your vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you clearly understand how this medication affects you. 

The potential effects of Mestinon on a developing fetus are uncertain. Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive while taking this medication. 

The transfer of pyridostigmine into breast milk and its impact on nursing infants is unclear. If you are currently breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking this medication.
