Description

Indications

Metamucil is a fiber supplement that contains psyllium husk, a type of soluble fiber that absorbs water in the gut and forms a gel-like substance. This gel helps to bulk up the stool, making it easier to pass, and can help relieve constipation or regulate bowel movements.

Metamucil increases the amount of bulk in your stool, stimulating intestinal movement. This drug increases the water content of the stool, leading to a softer consistency and easier passage. Psyllium, a type of bulk-forming laxative, can be used with a proper diet to manage high cholesterol.

Psyllium husk has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels by binding to bile acids in the gut and preventing their reabsorption into the bloodstream. This can lead to a decrease in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels when used in combination with a low-cholesterol and low-saturated fat diet. However, it’s important to note that Metamucil should not be used as a sole treatment for high cholesterol and should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Uses and Dosage

Essential to take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. If you are using it without a prescription, carefully follow the instructions provided with the product. If you have any questions or concerns, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

To prevent choking, swallow this medication with a full glass of water or another liquid (8 ounces/240 milliliters). If you are using the wafer form, chew it thoroughly before swallowing.

For powder forms, measure each dose according to the label instructions. Mix it in a full glass of water or other liquid (8 ounces/240 milliliters), stir thoroughly, and drink it immediately. If the mixture becomes too thick, you can add more water. However, do not inhale the powder, as it can cause an allergic reaction.

Your dose will depend on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Stay within the recommended dose or use this medication more frequently than prescribed.

Side Effects

Here are five potential side effects of Metamucil that you should be aware of:

  • Nausea or vomiting: This is a common side effect of many medications, including Metamucil. If vomiting occurs, stop using Metamucil and contact your healthcare provider.
  • Gas: Feeling gassy can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. If you experience gas after starting Metamucil, trying a different medication in this class could help.
  • Abdominal cramping and bloating: These are common side effects of Metamucil. Bloating happens when people don’t drink enough water when taking their dose of Metamucil. In most cases, bloating is temporary and disappears after your body adjusts.
  • Diarrhea: Metamucil is a laxative. It can cause diarrhea or loose stools for some people. If this occurs, stop taking it and stay hydrated until this side effect resolves.
  • Bowel obstruction is a severe side effect that can occur with Metamucil. Especially true if you don’t follow proper instructions while using it. Metamucil needs water to work, so not drinking enough water with your dose can lead to a blockage. Symptoms of a bowel obstruction include:
    • Severe stomach pain
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting

Contact your healthcare provider immediately if this happens.
