Indications 

Famotidine belongs to a group of drugs called H2 blockers and is used to treat stomach and intestinal ulcers, prevent intestinal ulcers from returning, and alleviate symptoms associated with certain stomach and throat problems. These symptoms may include stomach pain, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and a persistent cough. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Uses and Dosage 

To take this medication, follow your doctor’s instructions and take it orally once or twice daily, with or without food. If taken once daily, take it before bedtime. The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Take other medications as recommended by your doctor and consult them or a pharmacist if you have questions.  

Take the medication regularly at the same time(s) each day and do not increase the dose or take it more often than prescribed. If using nonprescription famotidine, take one tablet by mouth with water as needed for acid indigestion or heartburn, or take 1 tablet before eating foods or drinking beverages that cause heartburn. Do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours or for more than 14 days in a row without talking with your doctor. Do not stop taking the medication without your doctor’s approval.

• Signs of infection 
• Mental/mood changes

• Fainting 
• Seizure 

Allergic Reactions

Although a severe allergic reaction to this medication is rare, seek medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms such as: 

• Rash 
• Swelling 
• Severe dizziness 
• Difficulty breathing 

Caution 

Before taking famotidine, inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies, including to other H2 blockers, and your medical history, especially if you have immune system, kidney, liver, or lung problems or other stomach issues. Seek medical attention immediately if you have serious symptoms such as chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or bloody stools. If you plan to self-treat with this medication, seek medical attention immediately if you experience difficulty swallowing, bloody vomit or stools, or frequent chest pain.
