Indications 

Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine that effectively mitigates allergy symptoms, including but not limited to watery eyes, runny nose, itching eyes and nose, sneezing, hives, and itching. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of histamine production by your body in response to an allergic reaction. This medication effectively blocks serotonin, another natural substance present in your body. However, this drug is not recommended for neonates or premature infants. 

Uses and Dosage 

Follow your doctor’s instructions precisely when taking this medication. Do not exceed the recommended dose or take it for a more extended period than directed. Adhere to the instructions on the prescription label. 

Under no circumstances should you administer this medication to a child under 4. Always consult with a doctor before providing cold or allergy medication to a child, as misuse of such medicines in young children can result in death. 

Use a specialized dose-measuring device, such as a spoon or cup, to measure liquid medication rather than a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring tool, request one from your pharmacist. 

Keep the medicine at room temperature, avoiding moisture, heat, and light exposure. 

Side Effects 

Common Side Effects

The following side effects may occur while taking this medication:  

• Drowsiness 
• Dizziness 
• Blurred vision 
• Constipation 
• Dry mouth/nose/throat 

If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your physician or pharmacist promptly. 

To alleviate dry mouth, try (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, (sugarless) gum, water, or a saliva substitute. 

Severe Side Effects

Notify your physician immediately if you encounter any severe side effects, such as  

• Mental/mood changes such as (restlessness, confusion, and hallucinations) 
• Tremors 
• Difficulty urinating 
• Fast/irregular heartbeat 

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience severe side effects such as seizures. 

Allergic Reactions

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to this medication may occur. Seek medical assistance immediately if you experience any symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, including: 

• Rash 
• Itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat) 
• Severe dizziness 
• Difficulty breathing 

Caution 

Before using Periactin, this drug must confirm that you are not allergic to cyproheptadine, any of the substances mentioned in the leaflet, or other similar medications. Indications of an allergic reaction may include but are not limited to shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, facial swelling, or skin rash. 

Before administering this medication, this is advisable to assess its ingredients to ensure its compatibility with your medical history. Consult your physician or pharmacist if you have a history of lower respiratory tract symptoms, blood dyscrasias, bronchial asthma, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or if you are on medication for any other health condition.
