Drug Description

Indications

Atomoxetine is a medication utilized to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include psychological, social, and other therapies. Its mechanism of action involves the restoration of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain, leading to improvements in attention, concentration, focus, and reduction in hyperactivity.

Uses and Dosage

Do not suddenly stop taking Strattera without talking to your doctor first. Your doctor may need to gradually reduce your dose to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If this drug is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

Do not take Strattera if you are taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the past 14 days. This can cause serious drug interaction. MAOIs include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.

Strattera may interact with other medications and supplements, including certain antidepressants, blood pressure medications, cold or allergy medications, and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting Strattera.

Strattera may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.

Strattera may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with certain medical conditions or a history of specific mental health issues. Talk to your doctor about your medical history before taking Strattera.

Cautions

Children and adolescents diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treated with atomoxetine may have a higher likelihood of having suicidal thoughts compared to those not treated with the medication. As a result, close monitoring of your child’s behavior is essential, particularly at the beginning of treatment or when there is a dosage change.

Any sudden or significant changes in your child’s mood or behavior, such as feeling hopeless, experiencing new or worsening depression, or talking about harming or killing themselves, should be reported to their doctor immediately. Other symptoms to watch for include extreme agitation, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, irritability, aggressive behavior, and sudden changes in activity levels or behavior.

Your child’s doctor will want to conduct frequent follow-up appointments and may even need to speak with you or your child over the phone. Attending all scheduled office visits and following the doctor’s instructions carefully is crucial. Strattera is recommended to read the Medication Guide provided by the manufacturer each time you refill the prescription and seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

You should discuss the risks and benefits of atomoxetine with your child’s doctor and consider alternative treatments. Not treating ADHD could have serious consequences, and make an informed decision with your doctor’s guidance.
