Description

Indications

Chlorpromazine is a conventional antipsychotic medication primarily utilized to manage psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia, but it has a range of other indications. These include the treatment of bipolar I acute manic episodes, acute agitation characterized by explosive hyperexcitable behavior disproportionate to the initial provocation, persistent singultus, relief of apprehension before surgery, adjunct treatment of tetanus, acute intermittent porphyria, and off-label treatment of serotonin syndrome and migraine-associated relief of nausea and vomiting.

Chlorpromazine’s effectiveness in treating bipolar disorder has been mainly established for controlling manic episodes, which include symptoms such as excessive energy, decreased need for sleep, increased excitability and impulsivity, and grandiose ideations.
