Description

Indications

Videx EC is a medication used to treat HIV infection. It is usually used as part of a combination therapy regimen for the treatment of HIV. It is often prescribed alongside other antiretroviral medications to enhance its effectiveness and reduce the risk of developing drug resistance.

Didanosine, the active ingredient in Videx EC, is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). It works by interfering with the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is responsible for converting the viral RNA of HIV into DNA. By inhibiting this enzyme, Videx EC helps prevent the replication of the virus.

Use and Dosage

Videx EC capsules should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules, as they are designed to release the medication slowly in the body. Videx EC can be taken with or without food. However, take it on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal. This helps optimize absorption of the medication. The recommended dosages of Videx EC (didanosine) can vary depending on factors such as age, weight, and renal function.

  • For Adult Patients: The recommended total daily dose of Videx EC for adult patients is typically based on body weight. The dosage may range from 200 mg to 400 mg per day, taken as a single dose or divided into two doses. However, note that the specific dosing instructions may vary and should be determined by your healthcare provider.
  • For Pediatric Patients: The recommended doses for pediatric patients may also vary depending on factors such as age and weight. The dosages for Videx EC formulation are expected to provide pharmacokinetic exposures within the desired range.
  • Renal Insufficiency: For patients with renal insufficiency (impaired kidney function), the dosage of Videx EC may need to be modified.

Take Videx EC regularly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Try not to miss any doses. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Be aware of the symptoms of pancreatitis, such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, and to seek medical attention if these symptoms occur.

  • Videx EC may interact with other medications, including antacids, certain antibiotics, and certain antiviral medications. These interactions can affect the effectiveness of Videx EC or increase the risk of side effects. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential drug interactions.
  • The safety of Didanosine during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding.
