Drug Description

Indications

Drontal Plus, an exclusive prescription-based canine dewormer, offers a comprehensive solution against various types of worms. It effectively eliminates tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Drontal Plus incorporates three distinct active ingredients, each with unique mechanisms of action to combat different worms.

One of these ingredients, Praziquantel, induces paralysis in tapeworms, causing them to detach from the intestinal walls and enabling digestion by the dog. As a result, the presence of worms in the stool may not be observed due to their partial or complete digestion following medication administration.

Pyrantel pamoate, another key ingredient, demonstrates efficacy against pinworms, hookworms, and roundworms. Its mode of action mirrors that of praziquantel by immobilizing nematodes, allowing the body to expel them naturally.

In contrast, Febantel specifically targets whipworms and operates through a distinct mechanism from the other two active ingredients. By impeding the whipworm’s ability to metabolize glucose, Febantel effectively eradicates the worms from the body, resulting in their demise and elimination.

Uses and Dosage

Drontal Plus can be administered to dogs either with or without food, providing the flexibility to administer the medication on its own or concealed within a treat. The flavored nature of the pills often makes them enjoyable for many pets during the administration process.

Drontal Plus is available in three different dosage strengths, which are tailored to the weight of the dog. The specific recommended dosage amounts for each strength are outlined below:

  • Drontal Plus for puppies and small dogs:
    • Dogs weighing 2–4 pounds: Administer 0.5 tablets
    • Dogs weighing 5–7 pounds: Administer 1 tablet
    • Dogs weighing 8–12 pounds: Administer 1.5 tablets
    • Dogs weighing 13–18 pounds: Administer 2 tablets
    • Dogs weighing 19–25 pounds: Administer 2.5 tablets
  • Drontal Plus for medium-sized dogs:
    • Dogs weighing 26–30 pounds: Administer 1 tablet
    • Dogs weighing 31–44 pounds: Administer 1.5 tablets
    • Dogs weighing 45–60 pounds: Administer 2 tablets
  • Drontal Plus for large dogs:
    • Dogs weighing 45–60 pounds: Administer 1 tablet
    • Dogs weighing 61–90 pounds: Administer 1.5 tablets
    • Dogs weighing 91–120 pounds: Administer 2 tablets

These dosage guidelines ensure an appropriate and effective treatment based on the size and weight of the dog, promoting optimal outcomes when using Drontal Plus.

Side Effects

In studies where dogs were administered significantly higher than the recommended dosage of Drontal Plus, cases of vomiting and diarrhea were observed. However, note that these symptoms resolved once the treatment period concluded.

When administered at the recommended doses, Drontal Plus may still cause mild side effects in dogs. These potential side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Presence of blood or mucus in stools

Monitor the dog’s response to the medication and consult a veterinarian if these side effects persist or worsen. Veterinary guidance can provide appropriate advice and address any concerns regarding the administration and potential side effects of Drontal Plus.

Cautions

Caution should be exercised when administering Drontal Plus to pregnant dogs due to studies indicating the potential for fetal abnormalities. Therefore, administer this medication to dogs that are currently pregnant. Drontal Plus should not be given to puppies younger than 3 weeks old or dogs weighing less than 2 pounds.

After administering Drontal Plus, handle your pet’s feces with great care. Following treatment, dogs may expel worm eggs in their feces. To minimize the risk of transmission, wear gloves when collecting and bagging feces. Properly dispose of the waste, ensuring that the securely sealed. Thoroughly wash your hands afterward to maintain proper hygiene standards. By following these precautions, you can help reduce the potential spread of worm eggs and promote a safe environment for both your pet and yourself.
