Drug Description

Indications

Emend Tri Pack is a prescription medicine used in conjunction with other drugs to manage post-surgical or chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Classified as an antiemetic medication, Emend works by inhibiting the activity of neurokinin, a natural brain substance responsible for inducing nausea and vomiting.

Uses and Dosage

Before using Emend Tri Pack and with each prescription refill, carefully read the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for questions or additional information.

Emend Tri Pack is available in two varying strengths, and your doctor may recommend a specific schedule for each strength. Adhere strictly to your doctor’s instructions regarding the correct strength and timing.

Typically, these medications are taken one hour before the chemotherapy session on days 1, 2, and 3. If no chemotherapy is scheduled for days 2 and 3, the medications should be taken in the morning.

Emend capsules should be ingested whole and should not be opened, chewed, or crushed. They can be taken with or without food.

For optimal outcomes, take Emend Tri Pack exactly as directly. Avoid exceeding the recommended duration as prescribed by your doctor.

Cautions

Before starting treatment with Emend Tri Pack, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to aprepitant, fosaprepitant, or any of the inactive ingredients contained in this pack.

Disclose to your doctor your medical background before using Emend Tri Pack to determine its suitability for your condition, particularly if you have a history of liver disease.

Interactions with other medications can affect the elimination and effectiveness of Emend. Examples of interacting drugs include:

  • Azole antifungals (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole)
  • Diltiazem
  • Macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin)
  • Nefazodone
  • HIV protease inhibitors (e.g., nelfinavir)
  • Rifamycins (e.g., rifampin, rifabutin)
  • Ritonavir
  • St. John’s wort
  • Specific anti-seizure medications (carbamazepine, phenytoin)

Conversely, Emend has the potential to either accelerate or decelerate the metabolism of other medications, thereby influencing their efficacy. Drugs susceptible to these effects are:

  • Elacestrant
  • Flibanserin
  • Lomitapide
  • Pimozide

To lower the risk of such interactions, inform all your healthcare providers about your comprehensive medication regimen, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

If warfarin is part of your medication regimen, Emend may interfere with its efficacy. Your doctor should conduct blood tests within two weeks of your treatment to assess the efficacy of warfarin.

Avoid concurrent use of aprepitant and fosaprepitant as they have a high degree of similarity.

Notify your doctor of your pregnancy status and intentions, as the use of Emend Tri Pack may pose a risk to the developing fetus.

Emend may reduce the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives like pills, patches, or rings, potentially leading to pregnancy. Consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the need for additional reliable birth control methods while taking this medication and for one month after discontinuation.

Moreover, inform your doctor of any new instances of spotting or breakthrough bleeding as they may indicate decreased effectiveness of your contraception.

Seek medical advice regarding the safety of breastfeeding while taking Emend Tri Pack to guarantee your child’s well-being.
