Indications 

Aromasin (exemestane) is an oral medication that functions by inhibiting the production of estrogen in postmenopausal women. This mechanism of action may result in impeding the progression of specific types of breast tumors that require estrogen for growth. 

Aromasin is utilized for treating early and advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Early-stage breast cancer refers to cancer that has not metastasized beyond the breast. Advanced breast cancer is defined as cancer that has spread to other areas of the body. 

In certain cases, Aromasin may be administered following a 2-3 year tamoxifen therapy or if tamoxifen has failed to produce the desired therapeutic outcomes. 

Uses and Dosage 

Patients are advised to carefully read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by their pharmacist before starting to use exemestane and every time they get a refill. If they have any questions, they should consult their doctor or pharmacist.  

The medication is to be taken orally, usually once daily after a meal or as directed by the doctor. Dosage is determined based on the patient’s medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications they may be taking. 

Inform the doctor and pharmacist about all the products used, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products. To obtain the maximum benefit from the medication, it should be used regularly, at the same time each day.  

Side Effects 

Seek emergency medical attention right away if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction to Aromasin, such as: 

• Hives 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat 

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: 

• Chest pain or pressure 
• New or unusual bone pain 
• Swelling in the hands or feet 
• Shortness of breath, even with mild exertion 
• Signs of a blood clot, such as sudden numbness or weakness, problems with vision or speech, or swelling or redness in an arm or leg 

Common side effects of Aromasin may include: 

• Hot flashes 
• Headache and fatigue 
• Joint pain 
• Nausea 
• Increased appetite 
• Sleep problems (insomnia) 
• Increased sweating 

Caution 

Before using Aromasin, make sure to inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, or if you have not yet completed menopause and are still having menstrual periods.  

Do not use Aromasin if you are allergic to exemestane, if you have not started menopause, or if you are pregnant or able to become pregnant, as it could harm the unborn baby. 

To obtain the most benefit from Aromasin, use it regularly and have your prescription refilled before running out of medicine completely. You may need to take this medication for up to 5 years, follow your doctor’s instructions. Note that this medicine may not work as effectively if taken with hormone replacement medication.
