Drug Description

Indications

Chantix is a prescription medication that assists individuals 18 years old and above in discontinuing smoking. It can be utilized as a standalone therapy or in combination with other medicines, as deemed appropriate by a healthcare professional.

Chantix is classified as a smoking cessation aid, a therapeutic category of medications. It operates by inhibiting the rewarding effects of nicotine on the brain, thereby reducing the urge to smoke.

Uses and Dosage

Before starting therapy with Chantix and with each subsequent refill, thoroughly review the medication guide and patient information leaflet supplied by your pharmacist. Should you have any inquiries or concerns, kindly direct them to your physician or pharmacist for clarification.

The standard dose and duration of treatment outlined here may vary based on the individual’s medical condition and response to therapy. If a different prescription is provided, strictly adhere to it.

Chantix is typically initiated with a low dose, administered once daily, and gradually titrated to twice daily (morning and evening) administration over the first week of treatment.

Chantix is formulated in tablet form and should be ingested whole, accompanied by a full glass of water after a meal.

To maximize the likelihood of smoking cessation success, take this medication at the same time(s) daily. It is also best to use this medication with a comprehensive stop-smoking program that includes education, support, and counseling components.

There are three administration methods available for Chantix:

First option – Establish a clear and defined date for smoking cessation.

  • Upon determination of the desired date for smoking cessation, Chantix may be initiated one week before that date.
  • Although it is acceptable to continue smoking during the initial week of Chantix treatment, it is recommended to make a sincere effort to discontinue smoking on the established quit date.

Second option – Initiate treatment with Chantix prior to determining the date of smoking cessation.

  • Commence Chantix at the lowest dose and titrate as directed by a healthcare provider.
  • Pick a date for smoking cessation between days 8 and 35 of treatment.
  • On the designated quit date, smoking should be stopped, and the prescribed dose of the medication should be continued for the duration of treatment as directed by the physician.

Third option – Gradual Cessation

  • For individuals unsure of their ability to quit smoking abruptly or prefer a gradual cessation, Chantix may be initiated and smoking cessation may be achieved over 12 weeks of treatment.
  • In weeks 1 to 4: try to reduce the daily consumption of cigarettes by half the initial usage.
  • In weeks 5 to 8, aim to smoke only a quarter of the starting number of cigarettes daily.
  • In weeks 9 to 12, continue to reduce the daily cigarette intake with the goal of quitting smoking altogether by the conclusion of the 12-week period or sooner if you feel prepared.

It is recommended to make a concerted effort to quit smoking on your designated quit date. If you have a lapse and smoke, you should resume the quit attempt.

If complete smoking cessation has been achieved within 12 weeks, your healthcare provider may consider extending Chantix therapy for an additional 12 weeks to sustain cigarette abstinence.
