Description

Indications

Lanoxin Solution is an oral solution formulation of the medication digoxin. Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside commonly used to treat heart failure and certain heart rhythm disorders, such as atrial fibrillation. It helps to strengthen the contractions of the heart muscle and control the heart rate.

Lanoxin Solution contains the active ingredient digoxin, which belongs to a class of medications called cardiac glycosides. Digoxin works by inhibiting the sodium-potassium ATPase enzyme, which increases the concentration of intracellular calcium in heart muscle cells. This leads to increased contractility (strength of contraction) of the heart muscle and a decrease in heart rate.

Use and Dosage

Lanoxin Solution is usually taken by mouth once daily, either with food or on an empty stomach. The dosage of the medication will depend on your age, weight, medical condition, and other factors.

Here are some general guidelines for using Lanoxin Solution:

  1. Shake the bottle: Before each use, gently shake the bottle to ensure the medication is well mixed.
  2. Measure the dose: Use a specially marked measuring device or an oral syringe to measure the prescribed dose accurately. Do not use a regular household teaspoon to measure the medication, as it may not provide an accurate dose.
  3. Administer the solution: Administer the measured dose of Lanoxin Solution directly into the mouth. You can give it to the patient by mouth, either by swallowing or by using a dropper or oral syringe to place it under the tongue.
  4. Follow the prescribed dosing schedule: Take Lanoxin Solution exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional. Do not change the dose or stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
  5. Take with or without food: Lanoxin Solution can be taken with or without food. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional.
  6. Store as directed: Store the Lanoxin Solution at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Follow any specific storage instructions provided on the product packaging.

Note that Lanoxin Solution is a prescription medication, and the specific instructions may vary depending on the patient’s individual needs. Always consult your healthcare professional or pharmacist for personalized instructions and advice regarding the use of Lanoxin Solution.

Cautions

  • Drug Interactions: Lanoxin Solution can interact with other medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all the medications and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
  • Kidney and Liver Function: Lanoxin is primarily eliminated through the kidneys and liver. If you have impaired kidney or liver function, your doctor may need to adjust your dosage to ensure safe and effective use of the medication.
  • Electrolyte Imbalance: Lanoxin can affect the levels of electrolytes, such as potassium and magnesium, in your body. Maintain proper electrolyte balance, as low levels of potassium or magnesium can increase the risk of side effects associated with Lanoxin. Your doctor may order regular blood tests to monitor your electrolyte levels.
  • Thyroid Disorders: Individuals with thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism, may require close monitoring while using Lanoxin, as thyroid hormones can affect the sensitivity to digoxin.
  • Heart Rhythm Disorders: Lanoxin is often used to treat heart rhythm disorders, but it can also affect heart rhythm. If you have certain heart rhythm disorders, such as ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, your doctor will closely monitor your heart rhythm while on Lanoxin.
  • Toxicity: Digoxin toxicity can occur, especially if the levels of digoxin in the blood become too high. Symptoms of digoxin toxicity can include nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, confusion, and irregular heartbeat. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Lanoxin may be prescribed during pregnancy or breastfeeding if the benefits outweigh the risks. However, discuss the potential risks with your healthcare professional.
